Travis (TJ) Phaup joined the Cumberland Staff as a graduate assistant. After spending the last three years at Kentucky Wesleyan College as a player/coach.
Phaup will be assisting defensive coordinator, Taurean Smith, with the defensive backs and acting as the team’s video coordinator and assist in the booth this season for the defensive side of the football. Phaup is excited to join the Cumberland University Phoenix Football Team coaching staff under the direction of Head Coach Tim Mathis.
As a senior at Kentucky Wesleyan College, Phaup decided to forgo his final year of eligibility in order to begin his coaching career. Phaup assisted then Head Coach Taurean Smith with the DB’s, worked in the booth for the defensive unit and acted as the Panthers video coordinator. The Panthers defensive staff produced 5 All-Great Midwest Conference Players led by First Team member Alijah McGhee who finished with 37 tackles, 6 Interceptions and 7 pass breakups.
During his junior season at Kentucky Wesleyan, Phaup played wide receiver and was a member of the special teams uint, participating in all 10 contest for the Panthers.
As a Sophomore Phaup participated in game one as a wide receiver and special teams member before ending his season with a broken collarbone. Phaup finished the season as a player/coach working with the wide receivers where he had the opportunity to play alongside and work with Keelan Cole, the most prolific wide receiver in Kentucky Wesleyan Football history, now a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Phaup began his college football career at Birmingham Southern College. Phaup was a backup QB for BSC and a member of the special teams units. Phaup transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan College following his freshman season.
A native of Madisonville, KY, Phaup was a two year starter at QB for the Madisonville North-Hopkins Maroon High School Football Team. As a senior Phaup lead the Maroons to a 10-3 season and the regional championship game, finishing the season with 1411 passing yards and 15 TD’s while rushing for 872 yards and 14 TD’s. Phaup was named to the all-conference team as a QB and was a 4-time academic all-state member.
Phaup earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Kentucky Wesleyan College in May of 2019 and is currently pursuing his Master’s in Sports Management from Cumberland University.
