Bulldogs win TSAC regular season, top seed at tournament
LEBANON, Tenn. – With the results from this past weekend, Cumberland University has secured its second straight TranSouth Conference regular season crown and will be the No. 1 seed at next week’s TranSouth Championships in Paducah, Ky.
The Bulldogs, 43-8 overall and 14-2 in the TranSouth, are ranked second nationally this week for the fourth consecutive time in the NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Cumberland has won 14 consecutive games heading into the final conference series of the year, Thursday and Friday at Mid-Continent.
The Bulldogs are three games ahead of second-place Union University. CU won 2-of-3 from Union in Jackson on the opening conference weekend of the season in March. Cumberland and Union are the only teams to qualify for the TranSouth Championships right now, as five teams – Freed-Hardeman, Lyon College, Bethel University, Martin Methodist and Trevecca Nazarene – are battling for the final four spots in the tournament.
Cumberland won last year’s TranSouth regular season championship with a 15-5 record, two games better than Trevecca Nazarene. The Bulldogs also won the regular season title in the TranSouth in 2006. By virtue of holding the No. 1 seed for next week’s conference tournament, CU will play the first game of the tourney at Noon on Monday, May 10 at Brooks Stadium in Paducah, Ky.
