Bulldogs sweep Martin Methodist

LEBANON, Tenn. – Max Kautz hit a three-run homer in the opener and a solo shot in the second game and Aaron Wilkerson allowed one run on four hits in the second contest, as second-ranked Cumberland swept a doubleheader at Martin Methodist, 6-4 and 11-1, Friday at Sam Davis Park in Pulaski, Tenn.
Brian Karahalios added a two-run double in the first game and Shawn Schaefer struck out 10 in his seventh complete game of the year. The lefthander improved his record to 10-0 on the season, allowing three earned runs on six hits
The Bulldogs (39-8, 12-2 TranSouth) hit four homers in the second contest, a game shortened to five innings. Kautz, Matt Greener, David Fanshawe and Troy Frazier all homered for CU in the squad’s 10th consecutive victory.
Wilkerson earned his eighth straight victory, giving up a solo homer in the fourth inning after the Bulldogs led 11-0. The righthander (8-1) struck out nine and walked one while facing just five batters over the minimum.
Greener collected four hits in the doubleheader, two in each contest, while Fanshawe posted three hits in the twinbill.
MMC’s Martin Fiser (3-5) took the loss in the opener, allowing three earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work. Travis Garcia (8-4) suffered the loss in the second game, giving up eight runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
Martin Methodist (18-23, 7-7) got on the board first in the opener after Chad Hunter reached on a two-base error by Sam Kikla and stole third. He scored on another error by the Bulldogs, CU’s only miscues of the game.
Cumberland answered with three runs in the second to take the lead for good. Frazier reached on a throwing error by Garcia to start the inning and Fanshawe singled down the rightfield line, putting runners on the corners. With one out Kautz hit a three-run homer to left, his eighth of the season.
CU added two more runs in the third after Greener reached on an error by Seth McConnell to leadoff and Fanshawe drew a two-out walk. Karahalios then doubled to deep leftcenter for a 5-1 Bulldog lead.
Darin Holt led off with RedHawks to leadoff the bottom of the inning and Hunter walked with one out. Kyle Bowers followed with an RBI single, cutting the CU advantage to 5-2.
MMC plated two more runs in the sixth, starting with a one-out walk to Holden Killen. Kris Ruderer then doubled and Cory Poweroy scored both runs with a two-out single through the leftside.
The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the seventh with consecutive singles from Kikla and Greener to star the inning. Frazier plated the run with a sacrifice fly, his third sac fly in the last four contests.
Garcia singled with two outs in the bottom of the inning for the RedHawks, but Hunter bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the contest.
In the second game the Bulldogs struck quickly, scoring three times in the first.
Greg Appleton led off the game with a single and Kikla followed with a double. Appleton scored on a wild pitch before Greener belted his 19th homer of the year to leftcenter for an early lead.
Kautz hit a solo shot to rightcenter to leadoff the second for CU and the Bulldogs scored twice more in the third on solo shots from Frazier and Fanshawe.
Cumberland blew the game open with five more runs in the fourth.
Dave Weyer, Appleton and Kikla all walked with one out and Greener plated a pair with a double to rightcenter. Kris Miller’s sacrifice fly scored Kikla and Frazier was hit with two outs.
Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Fanshawe’s single to center for an 11-0 CU advantage.
Hunter hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning, his eighth of the year.
Cumberland and Martin Methodist are scheduled to play the final game of the series Saturday at Noon, weather permitting.
