Mandarino, Locante sweep TranSouth honors

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Mike Mandarino and Will Locante were named the TranSouth Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on Monday after helping the Bulldogs win all five of its games last week, including a conference sweep at Bethel University.

Locante tossed a three-hit shutout with a career-high 13 strikeouts in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at Bethel, walking one and allowing just five total baserunners. The lefthander now has four double-digit strikeout performances this season, all in seven-inning games, and he leads the TranSouth Conference with 67 strikeouts.

The Memphis, Tenn., native also tossed 1.2 scoreless innings Tuesday against Lindsey Wilson after missing his previous weekend start because of an infection in his foot. Against LWC he allowed one hit and struck out three in a game the Bulldogs won 9-8 in 13 innings. For the season Locante is 4-2 with 3.17 ERA in 48.1 innings of work and opponents are batting just .221. It is Locante’s first Pitcher of the Week award this season.

Mandarino batted .522 (12-for-23) in five games, collecting multiple hits in all five outings and scoring six runs. He added two doubles, three home runs and eight RBIs. It is Mandarino’s second Player of the Week honor after garnering the accolade on February 28 as well.

The junior was 3-for-7 with two doubles, one RBI and two runs scored in a 13-inning victory over Lindsey Wilson and collected three more hits with a home run and three RBIs at Campbellsville on Wednesday. He plated a run with each of his hits at Campbellsville with a solo homer and a pair of run-scoring singles.

In the weekend series against Bethel he was 6-for-12 with two homers and four RBIs, including the game-winning solo home run for a 1-0 victory in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. His two-run shot in the first inning of the opener gave the Bulldogs an early lead in a 5-2 victory.

For the season Mandarino is batting .336 and leads the Bulldogs with 12 doubles and 40 RBIs. He is also tied for the team lead with 10 home runs.

Cumberland has now swept the TranSouth Player and Pitcher of the Week awards three times in the last four weeks and four times in the last seven weeks this season.

Cumberland plays at Georgetown College at 2:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday and hosts Martin Methodist in a three-game series this weekend at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
