LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Anthony Gomez was named the Mid-South Conference and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after tossing a complete-game shutout over the weekend against Georgetown College.
The lefthander allowed just three hits (two in the final inning) against the 20th-ranked Tigers with two walks with six strikeouts. He faced just four batters over the minimum in the game, giving up two singles in the ninth inning and throwing 104 pitches in the 1-0 victory. He retired 17 of 19 batters faced before running into trouble in the ninth.
The Norwalk, Calif., native is now 3-0 with a 0.43 earned-run-average in 21.0 innings of work with 14 strikeouts this season. Opponents are batting just .114 against him. Gomez has allowed just one total run in his three starts, working five innings at Southern Poly the opening weekend before throwing a seven-inning shutout against Union University. He has tossed 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
Cumberland plays at Bryan College on Wednesday and heads to the University of the Cumberlands for a three-game series this weekend.
