LEBANON, Tenn. – Nick Conley tossed a career-best nine innings, allowing one run on five hits, and Chris Hall hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs in CU’s 7-1 victory over Mid-Continent University on Tuesday in Mayfield, Ky.

Cumberland (24-11-1) won for the 11th time in the last 14 contests (all in the last 13 days), taking the lead for good on Craig Monson’s two-run single in a four-run third inning. Hall’s two-run homer down the rightfield line, the first of his career, pushed the advantage to 6-1 in the seventh and Hall’s RBI single in the ninth plated Justin Johnston with the final run.

Conley (2-1) gave up a first-inning run to the Cougars (8-20) before tossing eight shutout frames the rest of the way, working in-and-out of trouble on several occasions. Jordan Arias was hit to leadoff the fourth inning and reached third on a failed pickoff throw and a wild pitch, but was caught in a rundown on a ground ball back to the pitcher off the bat of Jordan Adams.

In the sixth Joseph Blair drew a leadoff walk and Adams singled with one out, but Blake Vaughan was caught stealing and Jimmy Braswell grounded out to end the threat. Adams led off the ninth with a single and Dondre McCarter reached on an error, but Jordan Manney lined into a doubleplay to end the contest.

Conley retired the side in order only twice – the fifth and seventh innings – but the righthander overcame an error in the third and used 10 ground ball outs to keep the Cougars at bay.

Hall finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Cory Urquhart added two hits and Johnston scored twice.

Jack Coleman (0-3), the second of seven MCU hurlers, took the loss, giving up four runs on two hits in one inning of work.

Arias homered down the rightfield line with two outs in the first, giving the Cougars an early lead.

The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the third, starting with a leadoff double by Tyler Alford and a walk to Johnston. Hall was hit, loading the bases, before Monson’s two-run single down the leftfield line.

Brodie Ross reached on an error by MCU shortstop Arias and Ross and Monson executed the double steal for a 4-1 CU lead.

In the seventh Urquhart bunted his way on with two outs, setting up Hall’s home run on a 1-0 pitch.

Pinch-hitter Nolan Gray singled with two outs in the ninth for the Bulldogs and Urquhart walked before Hall’s single through the right side plated Johnston for the 7-1 advantage.

Cumberland plays a three-game series this weekend at Tennessee Wesleyan. Friday’s single game begins at 1 p.m. Central Time and Saturday’s doubleheader starts at Noon. The games were not originally scheduled for radio broadcast but will be carried on 1490 AM WCOR and 98.9 FM WANT as well as at www.GoCumberlandAthletics.com.
