LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Anthony Gomez earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Baseball Pitcher of the Week honors after giving up one run in his fourth complete game of the season in a 5-1 victory at 21st-ranked Campbellsville University.
The Norwalk, Calif, native remained perfect on the season (8-0) in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Campbellsville, scattering six hits in the nine-inning contest. The lefthander walked three and struck out five.
The Tigers plated a run in the first inning and then had just seven baserunners the rest of the contest, including only one over the final three innings. Gomez leads the Mid-South Conference with a 1.18 ERA in 61.0 innings of work, giving up 10 total runs with 34 strikeouts. Opponents are batting just .212 against him in nine appearances, all starts.
Cumberland, ranked 14th nationally, plays at Bethel University on Tuesday, the final contest on an 11-game road swing, before returning home this weekend for a three-game series against UVA-Wise.
