Gomez, Hall, Hunt lead baseball honors

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Anthony Gomez was voted Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Year, Chris Hall earned Freshman of the Year honors and Cory Urquhart and Craig Monson were named First Team All-Conference in a vote of league coaches announced here Wednesday night at the MSC Baseball Championships banquet.

Cumberland’s Woody Hunt also earned his 18th Coach of the Year award at the banquet as well, leading the Bulldogs to their sixth Mid-South Conference regular season championship.

Gomez has been one of the best pitchers in the nation this season, posting a 10-0 mark with a 0.95 ERA in 11 appearances. The junior ranks third nationally in ERA, fourth in wins and fifth in total runs allowed (10). The lefthander has given up just eight earned runs in 76.0 innings of work with 44 strikeouts this season. He has five complete games and three shutouts on his resume and has worked seven innings or longer in seven of his 11 starts. His ERA is even better at 0.71 in seven conference starts, allowing 37 hits with 31 strikeouts in 51.0 innings.

Hall has continued racking up hits and getting on base with great consistency since taking over as an everyday player in early March. The redshirt freshman leads the Bulldogs with a .406 batting average, second-best in the conference entering the league tournament, collecting 52 hits and scoring a team-best 46 runs in 47 contests. The Lebanon, Tenn., native has hit safely in 28 of his 37 starts this season and batted .482 (27-for-56) with two home runs, 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored over a 16-game stretch from March 23-April 17, including four contests with three or more hits and nine multi-hit outings. Hall also leads the club with 15 stolen bases this season, 25 percent of the club’s total of 60 bases swiped for the year.

Urquhart has produced at least one hit in 44 of the team’s 53 games this season, including multiple hits in a team-best 22 outings. The senior has also reached base at least once in 50 of the club’s 53 contests. The Yakima, Wash., native has hit safely in 17 of the last 22 outings, batting .318 (27-for-85) with 17 walks, 14 RBIs and 19 runs scored during the stretch. Urquhart produced 11 of his 29 RBIs in the first 14 games of the season while batting second or third in the lineup, but since returning to the leadoff spot, he has a .413 on-base percentage while batting .329 (51-for-155) with four doubles, 20 RBIs and 31 runs scored over 39 games since March 4. For the season he is hitting .318 with six doubles, 30 walks and 38 runs scored while starting all 53 games at shortstop.

Monson ranks second in the Mid-South Conference and 15th nationally with 48 RBIs heading into the conference tournament. The Bothell, Wash., native produced 29 RBIs in 27 games from February 19-March 26 with 10 multi-RBI outings during the stretch and at least one RBI in 16 of the 27 contests. He batted .392 (40-for-102) with 10 doubles and 10 runs scored as well. The senior has has posted 13 RBIs over the last 11 contests and is batting .333 (16-for-48) with four doubles and 14 RBIs over 13 contests. For the season he is hitting .333 with a team-leading 17 doubles and three triples along with two homers and 35 runs scored while starting all 53 games at first base.
