KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Tyler Alford belted a solo homer but 11th-ranked Cumberland managed just six hits and No. 19 Georgetown College scored three runs in the first and three more in the sixth to back up a complete game from Tyler Arthur in a 6-2 victory in an elimination game here Saturday at Hunter Wright Stadium.
The Bulldogs (38-17-1) dropped two straight games in the tournament after opening with a 3-1 victory over Shawnee State. Cumberland will wait to find out where it will play in the NAIA Championship Opening Round, which takes place May 9-13.
The Tigers (35-16) scored three times on six hits in the first inning, chasing CU starter Jake Collier after the righthander recorded just one out. Nick Conley gave up a solo homer to Martin Lemus in the second and tossed four-plus frames before running into trouble in the sixth.
Alford’s solo homer to start the third inning cut the Georgetown deficit to 4-1, but GC added three more runs in the sixth on four hits to put the game away.
Justin Moore and Ryan Serrato both collected three hits for the Tigers and Lemus and Moore each drove in two runs.
The early run support was all Arthur (7-4) needed, with the righthander giving up just six hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts. After working around six baserunners in the first four innings, he retired 16 of the final 18 batters of the game, save for a double by Bryan Haney and an error by second baseman Mike Steinke in the eighth inning.
Collier (5-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on six hits in one-third of an inning. Conley allowed four runs on seven hits in 5.1 frames.
Georgetown struck quickly, as Moore led off the bottom of the first with a single and went to second on a groundout by Steinke. Lemus followed with an RBI single to center, the first of five straight hits by the Tigers. Serrato singled to left before a single by Jordan Hinshaw down the leftfield line made it 2-0. EJ Murray’s bloop single into rightcenter gave GC a 3-0 edge and Collier was removed after an infield single by Marvin Flores.
Alford homered and Cory Urquhart singled and went to second on a passed ball to start the third for CU, but Arthur struck out the side to end the inning with the Bulldogs trailing, 4-1.
In the sixth Murray led off with a single and went to second on a bunt by Flores. T.C. O’Neal beat out a bunt, putting runners on the corners, before an RBI single down the leftfield line from Tanner Baldwin. Moore followed with a two-run double down the rightfield line for a 7-1 Georgetown advantage.
Haney led off with a double in the eighth and pinch-runner Chris Del Bianco went to third on a groundout by Urquhart and scored on Chris Hall’s sacrifice fly.
