LEBANON, Tenn. – Chris Hall collected five hits, Brodie Ross and Daniel Harrison each posted four hits and Tyler Anderson drove in four runs, as 13th-ranked Cumberland scored 15 runs in the first four innings en route to a 17-10 victory over Trevecca Nazarene on Friday at Jackson Field in Nashville, Tenn.
The Bulldogs (39-17-1) picked up Friday’s game to keep sharp between last week’s conference tournament and next week’s NAIA Championship Opening Round. The club will find out where it will play in the Opening Round on Monday and begins play on May 9.
Hall, Ross and Craig Monson all scored three times apiece in the contest, Ross drove in three runs and Monson and Harrison had two RBIs each. The 2-6 hitters in the lineup registered 18 of the team’s 21 hits, drove in 12 runs and scored 13 times in the victory.
Mitch Rainer (2-2), the third of nine CU hurlers, tossed one perfect inning to pick up the victory. TNU starter Rob Rowland (4-7) took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits in the first inning.
Cumberland scored four times in the first inning to take an early lead, with Cory Urquhart, Hall and Monson all singling to start the game. Ross’ single to center plated a run and Anderson was hit with one hit, forcing in another. Richie Seaton’s infield single drove home a run and Bryan Haney was also hit, forcing in the final run of the inning.
The Trojans (28-19) came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame, starting with a leadoff walk to Nick Howell by CU starter Jake Collier. With two outs Hunter Newman also walked before a three-run homer to left from Blake Rogers cut the Bulldog lead to 4-3 after one inning.
In the second CU plated six runs to take control of the contest.
Hall and Monson started the inning with back-to-back doubles before another single from Ross put runners on the corners. Harrison’s double to rightcenter plated a pair of runs before an RBI single from Anderson put the Bulldogs ahead, 7-3.
Seaton walked, loading the bases, and Haney drove in a pair of runs with a single through the right side. Josciel Veras and Hall were both hit later in the inning, forcing in one more run, for a 10-3 advantage.
In the fourth Hall reached on an infield single with two outs before a throwing error by TNU third baseman Newman allowed Monson to reach. Ross followed with a two-run double to leftcenter before an RBI double to leftcenter by Harrison plated another run. Anderson then belted a two-run homer to left, his second of the season, for a 15-3 lead.
Tyler Tichenor and Cameron Boyett led off the bottom of the inning with singles and moved up on a passed ball. Two runners scored later in the inning on balks.
In the fifth Urquhart walked with two outs and Hall followed with single on the left side. Monson’s single to right pushed the CU advantage to 16-5.
The Trojans scored five more runs in the bottom of the inning, four of them unearned.
Rogers led off with a solo shot to leftcenter and Corey Crunk reached on an error. Tichenor then singled to left before a one-out dumper into short rightfield by Cade Seeley scored a run. Mark Rayburn’s double just inside the first base bag plated a run and Jordan Foreman followed with a two-run single to center, cutting the Bulldog lead to 16-10.
Veras reached on an error by shortstop Rayburn in the seventh and Hall singled with one out. A failed pickoff attempt at first base got down the line and Veras came around to score on the play for the final run of the game.
