Phoenix unable to hold lead in 9-8 loss

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Rayden Sierra and Hector Morales each homered and Cumberland jumped ahead early, but 21st-ranked Campbellsville used a four-run inning to take the lead and posted a 9-8 victory over the Phoenix in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Championships here Thursday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.

Cumberland (33-18) plated four runs in the first inning, two on a Morales homer, and Jared Schmidt collected RBI singles in the first and third innings. Campbellsville (34-15) took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth inning thanks to a pair of CU errors.

Sierra’s solo homer in the top of the ninth pulled the Phoenix within a run, but DJ Wilson got the final two outs for his ninth save of the year.

Sierra finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, Schmidt recorded two hits and Mykel Gordon scored twice for the Phoenix.

Cumberland starter Polo Portela (8-2) suffered the loss, giving up eight runs on seven hits in four innings. Curtis Hoppe worked four innings of relief, allowed one unearned run on two hits with four strikeouts.

Campbellsville reliever Logan Roberts (2-1) struck out nine in three innings of relief to get the win. He gave up one hit and one walk.

Two-out singles by Sierra and Gordon got the Cumberland rally started in the first inning. Sierra scored on a wild pitch and Schmidt plated Gordon with a single to right. Morales then belted a two-run homer to center for a 4-0 CU advantage after a half inning.

The Tigers came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a walk to Matthew Valdez and a triple Tyson by Solis. Roberts’ sacrifice fly cut the CU lead to 4-2.

Sierra reached on an error to start the third and Gordon walked before an RBI single by Schmidt. Morales bounced into a doubleplay, but Gordon came across on the play, increasing the Phoenix advantage to 6-2.

Campbellsville answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame after Valdez was hit to leadoff and Solis doubled down the rightfield line. Roberts lined out, plating a run, and Ty Housden’s two-out double scored Solis, making it 6-4.

Nick Mira singled with one out in the CU fifth and pinch-runner Dalton Smith moved to second on a bad pickoff throw. Caleb Kellogg was hit and Sierra reached on catcher’s interference, loading the bases. Smith scored on a wild pitch for a 7-4 Cumberland advantage.

Campbellsville took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff single by Bryson Wallet and a walk to Chris Taitague. Brandon Douglas bunted and reached on a throwing error, loading the bases.

Valdez and Solis both singled, driving in runs, and another run came across on a wild pitch. Marco Murillo reached on a two-out error, allowing the final run of the inning to score.

Housden reached on a throwing error with one out in the seventh and stole second. Wallet’s two-out double to rightcenter increased the Campbellsville lead to 9-7.
