LEBANON, Tenn. – Jared Schmidt hit a walk-off solo homer in the first game and added a three-run shot in the second contest, helping Cumberland to a doubleheader sweep against Indiana-South Bend, 5-4 and 8-1, in baseball action Sunday at Ernest L. Stockton Field-Woody Hunt Stadium.
Cumberland (12-7) and Indiana-South Bend play another doubleheader Monday starting at 1 p.m. The two victories run the winning streak to 10 games for the Phoenix.
Schmidt’s RBI double and a two-run double from Jose Vera helped the Phoenix to a 4-2 advantage in the first contest, but the Titans (1-11) evened the game with two runs in the sixth. Schmidt led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo blast to leftcenter, the second straight outing with a walk-off homer after Jacob Herrera’s solo blast Thursday versus Indiana-Kokomo.
Cumberland plated single runs in the second and third innings before exploding for five runs in the fourth, the last three on Schmidt’s three-run homer to left, his sixth of the year.
That backed up five shutout innings from James Hatcher (2-0), giving up five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Will Hawks and Alex Landis got the final six outs in the 8-1 victory for the Phoenix.
Troy Cullen (0-4) was the loser for the Titans, allowing seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits in four innings.
Polo Portela (4-0) tossed a complete game for the win in the opener, allowing three earned runs on six hits. The righthander walked one and struck out eight. He gave up a two-run homer in the second inning and two more runs in the top of the seventh, though poor defense put him in a bad spot in the seventh.
IUSB starter Sam Libby worked 5.2 innings, giving up four runs on five hits. He walked three, hit two and struck out five. Brett Bashaw (0-1) gave up the homer to Schmidt for the loss, his only batter faced.
Schmidt finished the day 4-for-6 with six RBIs and three runs scored with two doubles and two homers. Jose Vera collected three hits with two RBIs and Tyler Jones and Bentley Jones both posted two hits in the second game.
The Titans struck first in the opener after a leadoff double down the leftfield line from Devon Connors. Portela got a strikeout and a pop-up but gave up a two-run homer to Logan Young, just to the left of the batter’s eye, for a 2-0 IUSB lead.
The Phoenix answered in the third inning, scoring three times on three hits.
Eddie McDaniels walked on four pitches with one out and LaDarius Williams singled to leftcenter, putting runners on the corners. Schmidt followed with an RBI double to rightcenter and with two outs, Vera laced a two-run double down the rightfield line, giving the home team a 3-2 edge.
Cumberland got an insurance run in the sixth when Bentley Jones was hit, went to second on a bad pickoff throw and third on a passed ball. CU tried the squeeze but could not get the bunt down and he was tagged out.
Bo Saunders then singled and pinch-hitter Tyler Jones doubled to rightcenter, plating Saunders for a 4-2 CU advantage.
IU-South Bend evened the game in the seventh with some help from the Phoenix, starting with a bloop single to short center by Young, a ball that should have been caught by an infielder.
Jose Sanchez singled to center and with two outs, Colin Mack dumped a short single to rightcenter, driving in a run and putting runners on the corners. A breaking ball got past CU catcher Bentley Jones, allowing the tying run to come across for a 4-4 contest.
Cumberland got on the board first in the second contest with singles from Tyler Jones and Bentley Jones to start the second inning. Tyler Jones was tagged out at the plate on a ground ball down the third base line from Herrera but Bentley Jones scored on a sacrifice fly down the rightfield line by Peyton Wheatley for a 1-0 CU edge.
The Phoenix extended the lead in the third with a leadoff double from Reid Bass and a single off the foot of the pitcher by Vera, putting runners on the corners. Schmidt’s sac fly to deep center plated Bass for a 2-0 advantage.
Cumberland took advantage of an error by the Titans to break the game open in the fourth inning.
Bentley Jones led off with a single and Herrera reached on an error by the IUSB shortstop. Wheatley bunted but too hard; Titans first baseman DeHerrera dove for the bunt and it fell out of his glove, but IUSB got a force out at second on the play.
Saunders dumped a single into short right, plating a run, and the two runners stole, with Wheatley scoring on a two-out single to center by Vera. Schmidt followed with a three-run homer to left, his second of the day, extending the advantage to 7-0.
IUSB got on the board in the sixth after a walk to Spencer McCool and Connors was hit. With two outs Young singled up the middle and Sanchez was hit, forcing in a run.
Daulton Smith was hit to leadoff the bottom of the inning for CU and pinch-hitter Austin Forest singled to right before a walk to Kyle Blackwell walked, loading the bases. Tyler Jones dumped a short single into right for an RBI, driving in the final run of the game.
