Nine squads earn NAIA Scholar Team honors

LEBANON, Tenn. – The NAIA honored nine Cumberland athletic squads Friday as NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2015-16 academic year. Teams must obtain a 3.00 cumulative grade-point-average or higher for all eligible varsity student-athletes during the past academic year to garner the award.

The sports of football, men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s cross country, women’s golf, women’s tennis, volleyball and wrestling were all named NAIA Scholar Teams for 2015-16. Men’s tennis posted the highest GPA for the academic year at 3.71, while women’s golf came in at 3.58, women’s cross country was next at 3.42 and volleyball tallied a 3.40.

Women’s tennis collected a 3.36 GPA, with men’s soccer at 3.28 and men’s golf collected a 3.11. Wrestling finished the year at 3.03 and football posted a 3.00 in 2015-16.

A total of 1,585 teams were honored by the NAIA for the academic success.
