LEBANON, Tenn. – Sophomore Tyler Tate posted six tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown in Cumberland’s win Saturday against Cincinnati Christian, earning Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division Defensive Player of the Week honors, as announced by the league office.
The Whitwell, Tenn., native returned a fumble 29 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Cody Carr forced a fumble on a running play to the left by CCU’s Garner Harris and the ball popped right into the hands of Tate, who raced 29 yards for the score.
It was the second touchdown of the year for Tate, who fell on a fumble at Edward Waters on September 16. The six tackles were the second-most this season for the redshirt sophomore linebacker, who has 32 total stops with 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries through seven games.
Cumberland hosts Bethel University this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Nokes-Lasater Field for Faculty-Staff Appreciation Day.
