Newcomer Powell pours in 22 in debut
LEBANON, Tenn. – Newcomer Brandon Powell scored 22 points in his first game and 11th-ranked Cumberland used a 16-4 run early in the second half to break open a close and defeat Lyon College, 72-47, Monday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Powell, a transfer from Marshall who became eligible Monday when school started, poured in six 3-pointers and hit 8-of-14 field goals overall. Brandon Springer added 20 points and Jamar Finley netted 14 for the Bulldogs, who were 10-of-28 from 3-point range.
Cumberland (13-2, 4-1 TSAC) used a 16-4 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to break open a close game and take control. Channing Tucker had a pair of baskets during the stretch, including a 3-pointer, while Powell and Finley both added 3-pointers.

CU led just 16-14 midway through the second half before a 14-5 run gave the home team a double-digit lead. Powell hit a 3-pointer and another bucket and Ahmed Abdelhamid added a pair of baskets.
Brandon Springer hit one free throw, Jamar Finley scored two points and Rodney James connected on two foul shots for a 30-19 advantage. The Bulldogs took a 30-21 lead into intermission, with Springer netting 15 before the half.
Cumberland hosts Lambuth Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
