Six players score in double figures in 101-60 triumph
LEBANON, Tenn. – A 21-0 run to begin the second half put the game out of reach, as 24th-ranked Cumberland defeated Blue Mountain College, 101-60, in the TranSouth Conference opener for both teams Thursday night at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
The Bulldogs (7-1, 1-0 TSAC) put together a 20-6 run midway through the first half and took an 18-point lead to intermission. Seven different players scored during the 21-0 stretch to start the second half, giving CU a 75-36 lead.
Channing Tucker led six Bulldogs in double figures with 19 points, while Brandon Springer scored 12 points with 12 rebounds. Rontreal Braxton netted 14 points, Kenneth Simms had 13, and Rodney James and Thomas Douglas both posted 12 points. James added nine boards, as CU outrebounded the Toppers, 66-45.
Blue Mountain hit only 24-of-84 shots from the field, including an astounding 9-for-45 from 3-point range. Jon Estes led the Toppers with 11 points and Kenny Whitis added 10.
The Bulldogs pulled away in the first half thanks to a 20-6 run midway through the period. Five different players contributed for CU, including six points from Braxton and five by Douglas. Tucker, Rodney Stowers and Springer all added buckets.
Cumberland limited Blue Mountain to just 32 percent shooting in the half, including 5-for-23 from 3-point range. Braxton scored 11 points and Douglas 10 before intermission. The Bulldogs led 54-36 at the break.
Cumberland hosts Freed-Hardeman Saturday at 4 p.m. in another TranSouth Conference matchup at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
