LEBANON, Tenn. – Trent Perry hit three triples in a row to spark a 15-2 run helping the Phoenix make a comeback in the first half, and Ty Sean Powell posted 17 points all in the second half sending Cumberland to a 92-78 victory over Oakwood University on Monday night here at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Neither team scored in the opening minute of the game but the Ambassadors took the lead going on a 12-6 run with a 3-pointer from Timothy Culberson to start the half. Perry started the scoring off for the squad with a triple and a jumper by Reid Pierce tied the score at five. Three triples in a row by Perry ignited a 15-2 run for the Phoenix helping them regain the advantage, 21-14.
Talik Talton’s triple pulled the Ambassadors within four but three consecutive layups for Diondrey Holt, Jr., put CU ahead by eight, 29-21 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Simeon Middleton hit a triple with two minutes left to keep Oakwood University within five points. The Phoenix tacked on four more points in the half with a jumper by Blake Johnson and a layup by Rhyan Townes to send the squad into the half leading, 39-33.
Talton made two field-goals to start the second half cutting the Ambassadors deficit to five, 42-37. A layup and a jumper by Holt, Jr., kept the Phoenix on top, 46, 37. Powell and Juandrico Walker scored 12 of Cumberland’s next 16 points taking a 62-48 advantage with 11:06 remaining.
Cumberland went on to score six more points in a row, off a layup by Pierce, two good free-throws by Townes and two points from Blake Johnson. Oakwood University ended the streak with a layup by Simeon Middleton and four points from Talton pulled the Ambassadors within 13, 70-57. Cumberland quickly responded with eight unanswered points, five from Townes who hit two free-throws and a triple.
Powell scored 10 of Cumberland’s final 19 points in the game, and Oakwood University made three triples in the final five minutes but the Phoenix came out on top, winning their first game of the season, 92-78.
Holt, Jr., posted 14 points and Walker added 11 in the game while Townes collected 11 points and nine rebounds. Cumberland shot 60.3 percent from the field and made 58 points in the paint compared to Oakwoods 38.
The Phoenix are back in action on Wednesday, November 1 versus Fisk University here at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
