Cumberland falls short to Southeastern in Classic

MCKENZIE, Tenn. -  Four Phoenix scored double digit points in today’s game but came up short against Southeastern University in the Chick Fil A Classic.

Cumberland Phoenix (3-2) made 42% of their shots attempted, as Southeastern Fire (1-0) hit 47% of their own. The Fire outrebounded the Phoenix 42-29.

DeMari Davis led the Phoenix in points with 21 by shooting 6-10 from the field, and 3-5 behind the arc. Davis recorded six rebounds and four assist. Jaylen Negron contributed to the Phoenix scoring as he scored 18 points and recorded three rebounds and two assist.

Aaron Ridley scored 16 points for the Phoenix and was a big impact on the rebound aspect of the game, as he grabbed nine rebounds, making him just one rebound short from having a Double-Double. Brandon Levier was able to score 11 points while recording three rebounds and two assist.

Southeastern’s Blake Morrow dominated the game as he racked in 39 points by shooting 11-16 from the field and 5-9 from the three. Jeremy Oppenheimer scored 18 points and recorded four rebounds and four assist for Southeastern.

The game started off quick for Cumberland as Levier scored a quick basket just 10 seconds into the game. Southeastern was quick to match it, throughout the game both teams went back and forth keeping the game just one to two points difference until the final minute of the first half when Cumberland’s Davis made an easy layup to put the Phoenix up by three then just thirty second later Negron was able to cash in two free throws, making it a 4-0 run for the Phoenix going into the half with the lead 49-44.

Morrow started the second half with a three for Southeastern to cut the lead down to two. At the 15-minute mark of the second half the Fire had a spark in their offense as they go on a 9-0 run against the Phoenix. Cumberland continued to contest shots but was unable to catch back up resulting in Southeastern defeating Cumberland with a score of 94-84.

The Phoenix will continue to compete in the Chick Fil A Classic on Saturday, November 9th, where they will face against No. 13 Oklahoma Science and Arts at 4 P.M.
