LEBANON, Tenn. – Seniors Zach Polston and Austin Williams each carded rounds of one-over 73 and sophomore Jacob Nolen added a 75, helping Cumberland to a 12-shot lead in the team standings after the first round of the Bill Sergent Invitational in men’s golf action Monday in London, Ky.

Cumberland posted a team score of 299, 12 strokes ahead of Midway University and 13 shots in front of Lawrence Tech.

Polston collected four bogeys and six pars in his first 10 holes, but the Lafayette, Tenn., native finished strong, three birdies on the last seven holes. He birdied two par-5’s, the 12th and 18th holes, and also the par-3 15th, and stands tied for third, two strokes behind Union College’s Erik Hermanson, the only player to shoot under par on Monday.

Williams made four birdies on the front nine but also a bogey and a double. The Lafayette, Tenn., native added another birdie at No. 12 but posted a bogey and a double on the way in for his round of 73.

Nolen was Mr. Steady in his round, recording 15 pars and three bogeys for a three-over 75. The Hendersonville, Tenn., native stands tied for seventh, four shots behind the leader.

Junior Garrett Daniel carded a six-over par 78, struggling on the front nine with six bogeys and three pars. The Linden, Tenn., native collected three birdies on the back nine at Nos. 10, 15 and 18. He is tied for 18th overall but only two shots from the Top 10.

Three triple bogeys sidetracked the round of freshman Reece Gaddes, who finished with an 86, tied for 42nd. The Lebanon native was five-over on the front nine before a triple at No. 9. The card looked much the same on the back side, shooting even par until triples at Nos. 16 and 17 and a par at the 18th to end the day.
