Daniel cards second-round 75, men hold on for one-shot victory
Cumberland's men held on for a one-shot victory Tuesday at the Bill Sergent Invitational.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Junior Garrett Daniel shot a three-over par 75 to move into the Top 10 and Cumberland men’s golf held on to win the team title by one stroke on Tuesday at the Bill Sergent Invitational in London, Ky.

Cumberland took an 11-shot lead into the second round but had to hold off Lawrence Tech by one shot down the stretch. Tech’s four scorers on Tuesday all shot 77 or better while the Phoenix had just one score lower than 78.

Daniel started his round with two bogeys and a double in the first four holes, but the Linden, Tenn., native reeled off eight consecutive pars before a birdie at the par-4 13th hole. He added another birdie on the par-5 18th for his round of three-over, tied for ninth overall.

Senior Austin Williams carded a 39 on the front nine with six pars and three bogeys and got to over-over for the round with two pars and two birdies to start the back side. The Lafayette, Tenn., native played the last five holes in five-over, though, with a pair of double bogeys en route to a 78. He tied for fifth overall to earn All-Tournament honors.

Senior Zach Polston’s scorecard was a complete roller coaster, with six birdies, five bogeys, one triple and a nine on the par-4 fifth hole. The Lafayette, Tenn., native started the round bogey-birdie-triple before a par and then the nine at No. 5. From there he was one-under over the final 13 holes but shot 79 for the day, placing eighth individually.
