No. 2 Rio Grande too much for CU

LEBANON, Tenn. – Rafael Maccauro scored on a free kick just before halftime and Richard Isberner added a goal in the 88th minute, as second-ranked Rio Grande took advantage of their opportunities in a 2-0 victory over Cumberland in men’s soccer action Friday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.

The Bulldogs (1-3-0, 0-1-0 Mid-South Conference) handled the potent URG offense (5-1-0, 1-0-0) relatively well and were a bit lucky, as the RedStorm hit the crossbar in the opening 15 minutes and the post in the second half. CU keeper Sully Shattuck made seven saves in goal and got help from a defender on another save in the second period.

Cumberland was whistled for a foul in the final minute of the first half and Maccauro took advantage on the free kick from 25 yards, beating Shattuck in the lower left corner with a curving shot past the wall. CU’s best scoring chance of the period came midway through, as Harry Mason took a breakaway pass and had one chance to beat URG’s Jack Marchant, but the goalie made the save to keep the match scoreless in the 28th minute.

In the second half Eric Clark’s header off a corner kick in the 69th minute sailed wide and Cumberland possessed the ball much more in the second half, but CU put together very few scoring chances. Rio Grande scored the final goal in the 88th minute, with Oliver Hewitt-Fisher feeding Isberner with a through ball down the center of the pitch and he beat a hard-charging Shattuck near the top of the box.

Cumberland plays each of its next four matches within the conference, traveling to Campbellsville University this Wednesday for a 7 p.m. CT match. The Bulldogs will host the University of the Cumberlands on September 22 at 3:30 p.m.
