Men's soccer loses on late goal

LEBANON, Tenn. – Caio da Cruz posted the game-winner in the 85th minute and No. 9 Lindsey Wilson escaped with a 2-1 victory over Cumberland in men’s soccer action Wednesday night at Walter S. Reuling Field in Columbia, Ky.

The loss ended a five-match winning streak for the Bulldogs (6-5-1, 4-2-0 Mid-South), who scored on an own goal in the 10th minute when a shot deflected off LWC defender Leander Zapheriou into the net.

The Blue Raiders (8-2-1, 4-0-1) knotted the score in the 25th minute when Aleksi Pahkasalo scored unassisted.

Cruz’s goal in the 85th minute came on an assist from Billal Qsiyer, giving LWC its third consecutive win since a 3-1 loss versus the University of Rio Grande.

Lindsey Wilson outshot the Bulldogs, 17-6, in the match and CU keeper Ian Hamilton posted seven saves while LWC’s Dalyan Hawes recorded one save.

Cumberland hosts Fisk University this Saturday at 1 p.m. and also takes on Georgetown College at home on Friday, October 17, part of a three-match homestand.
