LEBANON, Tenn. – Daniel Williams netted his seventh goal of the season in the 29th minute and Cumberland hit the post twice in the match but held off 19th-ranked John Brown University, 1-0, in men’s soccer action here Monday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.

The Phoenix (3-0-0) swept their three-match homestand to start the season by a combined score of 15-2, with Williams netting seven of those goals. He converted a long pass from Tyler Watson at 28:39, giving CU a 1-0 edge.

Bakary Bagayogo nailed the right post later in the first half from a bad angle and Watson drilled the right post late in the second period, hitting it square from about 12 yards. John Brown goalkeeper Adam Holt saved a Williams shot in the 57th minute and got some help from his teammates to clear away a shot by Patrick Hay in the 73rd minute.

Cumberland controlled the run of play for almost the entire 90 minutes, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 17-2, overall. Holt finished with a pair of saves and CU’s Bennet Strutz collected one save.

Cumberland plays at Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday and at Milligan College on Sunday before returning home September 12 to face Fisk University.
