LEBANON, Tenn. – Brian McNamara scored two goals and Markus Skraastad collected two assists in Cumberland’s 3-0 victory against the University of the Cumberlands in men’s soccer action here Tuesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
The Phoenix (8-1-0, 1-0-0 Mid-South) ran its win streak to five, all shutouts, limiting the Patriots (4-3-3, 0-1-0) to just two shots in the match.
McNamara started the scoring for the Phoenix in the 18th minute, taking a long ball from Skraastad, stopping the pass on a dime and firing low and left past UC goalkeeper Ahmed Ghatwary.
Skraastad played another beautiful long pass in the 27th minute, this one down the right side. Bakary Bagayogo raced onto the ball and chipped it past Ghatwary.
His shot was knocked away from the goal line by UC defender Brandon Scherr, but it went right to McNamara, whose shot bounced off Scherr, who was sprawled across the goal line after hitting the post hard and moving the goal. It was the sixth and seventh goals of the year for McNamara.
Cumberland struck again late in the period, this time with Patrick Crowley lofting a pass from near the right sideline to the top of the six-yard box. Daniel Picken volleyed the ball past Ghatwary for his first goal of the year in the 43rd minute, giving CU a 3-0 lead at intermission.
The second half got very chippy between the two clubs, with five yellow cards handed out. CU missed several chances to add to the lead. The Phoenix posted a 20-2 advantage in shots for the match.
Cumberland plays its next two matches on the road starting next Tuesday at 12th-ranked Campbellsville University before heading to 10th-ranked Lindsey Wilson on October 6.
