LEBANON, Tenn. – Brian McNamara posted a natural hat trick in the first 25 minutes and Daniel Pickens scored a pair of goals off the bench for 24th-ranked Cumberland a 7-0 win in men’s soccer action here Friday afternoon at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.
The Phoenix (9-2-1, 2-1-1 Mid-South) posted their eighth clean sheet of the season, allowing just two shots in the match by the Tigers (6-6-1, 1-3-0).
McNamara got the Phoenix on the board in the ninth minute, with Daniel Williams playing a thru-ball down the left side and McNamara’s left-footed shot going far post into the side net.
The senior then scored a beauty of a goal in the 16th minute, back-heeling a cross from Tosin Abudiore, again into the side net at the far post for a 2-0 Cumberland advantage.
The Kildare, Ireland, native made it 3-for-3 in the 25th minute, outjumping two defenders to head in a long cross from the right by Patrick Crowley. McNamara’s 12th goal of the year put the Phoenix ahead, 3-0.
Cumberland added a goal late in the period, with Alex Kenny passing across the top of the box to Picken, whose left-footed shot got past Georgetown goalkeeper Patrick Schwarz low and right in the 36th minute for a 4-0 CU lead at intermission.
The Phoenix outshot the Tigers, 17-1, forcing Schwarz into four saves.
Williams booted in a corner kick by Crowley in the 60th minute, his 10th goal of the year and first since September 16 at West Virginia Tech.
Picken added his second goal of the match in the 70th minute on an assist from Dylan Schwartz, taking a pass from the right and converting near the six-yard box.
In the 89th minute Alex Barger’s corner kick was headed across by Sondre Risa to Justin Beaty, who converted the chance for his first goal of the year.
Cumberland plays at Shawnee State on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT in Portsmouth, Ohio, and returns home next Saturday to take on the University of Pikeville at 2 p.m.
