LEBANON, Tenn. – Daniel Williams scored the game-winner with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation, giving Cumberland a 2-1 victory against Life University in men’s soccer action Wednesday night in Marietta, Ga.
Cumberland trailed 1-0 after six minutes, but Brian McNamara was tackled in the box and then converted the penalty kick in the 11th minute to even the match at one. The Phoenix controlled play for much of the contest, outshooting the Running Eagles, 13-5, including 8-4 in shots on goal.
Cumberland peppered the net of the home team, forcing Life goalkeeper Joe Davis to make six saves in the match, but the Phoenix finally broke through just before extra time.
Tyler Watson assisted on the game-winner to Williams at 89:44 in the match, his 13th goal of the season.
Cumberland’s Bennet Strutz collected three saves, all in the second half.
With the victory, the Phoenix clinched a tie for second in the Mid-South Conference. The league tournament begins Thursday, November 2, in Bowling Green, Ky. Cumberland ends the regular season this Saturday with a home match against ninth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett at 1 p.m.
