LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland goalkeeper Bennet Strutz was voted Mid-South Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and added NAIA Defensive honors on Tuesday, posting 10 total saves and allowing just one goal in two matches for the Phoenix.
The Leverkusen, Germany, native collected three saves and gave up one goal in a 2-1 victory at Life University, with CU scoring in the final minutes for the victory. The 6-foot-6 junior then registered seven saves in a scoreless draw against ninth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett, including two in the first five minutes of the match and an unbelievable diving stab in the first overtime to keep the Grizzlies off the board.
Strutz lowered his goals-against-average this season to 0.84 (13 goals in 16 matches) with 42 saves. He has seven shutouts in goal and Cumberland has recorded 10 clean sheets for the year, with Strutz in goal all but 82 minutes this year.
Cumberland opens play in the Mid-South Conference Championships on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Georgetown College at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green, Ky.
