LEBANON, Tenn. – Daniel Williams scored twice in the first half and 22nd-ranked Cumberland moved into the championship match with a 2-0 victory over 19th-ranked Campbellsville University in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Men’s Soccer Championships on Thursday in Bowling Green, Ky.
The Phoenix improved to 14-2-2 on the season, defeating the Tigers after recording a 1-1 draw five weeks ago at Campbellsville, with CU playing the final 70 minutes of the match with just 10 men.
Williams picked up a deflection in the box in the 10th minute and beat Campbellsville goalkeeper Andreas Nota far post for his 16th goal of the year. The junior added another score just before the half, this time from the top of the box, curling it just inside the far post in the 40th minute.
Cumberland outshot the Tigers, 11-7, in the match, with Nota collecting four saves and CU’s Bennet Strutz registering two saves in goal for the Phoenix.
Cumberland faces sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson in the MSC championship match Friday at Noon at Warren Central High School in Bowling Green. It marks the third appearance for the Phoenix in the conference tournament title game, losing to the University of Rio Grande in 2013 and winning on penalty kicks over Campbellsville in 2015.
