Lebanon, Tenn.- Three fast scores by Cumberland’s in the first 20 minutes helped the Phoenix (4-1) win over the Union Bulldogs (1-1) with a score of 5-3.
Junior Bakary Bagayoko scored a pair of goals, as well as Junior Tyler Watson scoring one goal and recording one assist. Junior Wilson Musyoka helped the phoenix increase the lead by scoring one goal and assisting on one. Freshman John Azar scored a single goal to make the final score 5-3 Phoenix victory.
Union’s Gavin Scott scored in the 12th minute of the first half by an assist from William Valencia. The score didn’t intimidate the Phoenix as Cumberland’s Bakary Bagayoko scored a goal just thirty seconds later in the 13th minute off an assist from Jonathan Waldenstrom.
A spark lit under the Phoenix offense as Tyler Watson scored off an assist by Brandon Gonzalez in the 20th minute making the lead 2-1 Phoenix lead. Another goal was scored quickly just 45 seconds later in the 21st minute by John Azar from an assist by Wilson Musyoka, making the score 3-1 Phoenix in the first half.
For the remaining first half, both the Phoenix and the Bulldogs played physical defense, especially by Cumberland’s Waldenstrom who performed a good tackle saving a goal inside the box in the final minute of the 1st.
The beginning of the second half didn’t have much action from either team until Cumberland’s Musyoka scored a long goal in the 66th minute making the score 4-1 Phoenix on top. Just two minutes later Bagayoko scored another goal for Cumberland off an assist from Watson to put the Phoenix ahead 5-1.
The score didn’t stop the Bulldogs from playing as Union’s James Jackson scored a pair of goals in the 86th minute which was assisted by Scott as well as the 87th minute to cut the lead down 5-3 phoenix lead. The Phoenix kept possession of the ball for the remaining minutes for the phoenix victory with a score of 5-3.
The Phoenix outshot the Bulldogs 16 to 7 with six shots on goal to the Bulldogs five.
The Phoenix will be back on the road Tuesday, September 17th against #17-ranked Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn. at 7 P.M.
