Marcelo earns second TranSouth POW honor

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland University’s Antonio Manuel Marcelo was named the TranSouth Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Monday after winning all four of his matches last week against nationally-ranked Lindsey Wilson and Lee University.

The Cascais, Portugal, native defeated LWC’s seventh-ranked Fernando Bogajo, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, and Lee’s Michael Yokosuk, 6-2, 7-5, both at No. 1 singles. The freshman is 11-0 in singles in dual matches and 14-3 this academic year.

In doubles Marcelo and Evan Sanna won 8-5 against Bogajo and Fredrik Graaner and 9-7 versus Yokosuk and Richard Gamble, both at No. 1. The CU duo upped their mark to 10-1 in dual matches and 15-4 this year. The Bulldogs lost 7-2 to 12th-ranked Lindsey Wilson but defeated 18th-ranked Lee, 9-0.

Cumberland, ranked 16th nationally, takes on Bethel University and Martin Methodist on the road this week and hosts Campbellsville University on April 24 before taking part in the NAIA Qualifying Tournament on April 27-28 in Norcross, Ga.
