Bulldogs claim 7-2 win at Bethel

LEBANON, Tenn. – Bethel University won two of the three doubles matches, but 16th-ranked Cumberland rebounded by sweeping the singles outings en route to 7-2 victory over the Wildcats on Wednesday in McKenzie, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (13-1) started slowly, with CU’s Pedro Rodrigues and Andres Burgos winning 8-0 over Raphael Sousa and Travis Hyman at No. 3, but Bethel’s Peter Baca and Kristian Takac defeated 19th-ranked Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Evan Sanna, 8-5, at No. 1 and Paolo Vecchi and Eduardo Espinar claimed an 8-4 win at No. 2 against Devin Crotzer and Na’im Azhar.

Cumberland came back in the singles, winning all six matches in straight sets.

Marcelo, ranked 29th nationally in singles, defeated 37th-ranked Peter Baca, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1, while Azhar posted a 6-3, 6-1, victory at No. 2 over Vecchi and Sanna recorded a 6-4, 6-0, win at No. 3 against Takac. Rodrigues won 6-2, 6-1, versus Hyman at No. 4, Burgos registered a 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 5 over Espinar and Cristhian Hernandez claimed a 6-1, 6-0, triumph at No. 6 against Sousa.

Cumberland plays at 19th-ranked Martin Methodist on Friday and hosts Campbellsville University on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
