Garijo Garrido, Grabuelda Cruañas take singles wins at MGA Fall Warmup

LEBANON, Tenn. – Ainhoa Garijo Garrido and Pau Grabuelda Cruañas won their respective draws in singles and both women’s doubles teams reached the finals for Cumberland in their first fall tournament this past weekend at the Middle Georgia State Fall Warmup in Cochran, Ga.

Garijo Garrido swept through three singles matches in straight sets in Bracket A, defeating Middle Georgia’s Julieta Lecce, 6-1, 6-2, and Young Harris College’s Elin Rundcrantz, 6-1, 6-0. In the finals the sophomore collected a 6-3, 6-3, victory against Lee University’s Francesca Tondi. CU’s Marianela Landi lost her first match in Section A to Tondi, 6-0, 6-2.

In Bracket B, Joana Bou Barcelo defeated Lee’s Carley Sickinger, 6-7, 6-4, 10-7, before dropping a 7-5, 6-1, decision to Laura Sanchez from Young Harris. Jasmine Shankar also won her first match in the same draw, 6-0, 3-6, 10-6, versus Middle Georgia’s Paolo Beneyto before losing 6-0, 6-2, to Lee’s Marta Garcia-Nieto.

In Bracket C for the women, Trinidad Aguirre defeated Middle Georgia’s Daniela Campo, 1-6, 7-5, 10-8, and posted a 6-4, 6-2, victory over Lee’s Laura Beth Hardesty before falling 6-2, 6-4, to Carol Quevedo from Young Harris. Belén Salazar Yañez dropped her first match, 6-2, 6-2, to Laura Cocoma from Middle Georgia.

In doubles in Bracket A, Garijo Garrido and Landi recorded an 8-4 win against Middle Georgia’s Jacqueline Heer and Lara Persianai and defeated Sanchez and Quevedo from Young Harris, 8-5. The final match against Orianna Labaqui and Ana Rodriguez from Young Harris was not played.

In Bracket B, Shankar and Bou Barcelo won 8-3 versus Middle Georgia’s Campo and Lecce before dropping an 8-5 decision to Lee’s Hardesty and Sickinger. Salazar Yañez and Aguirre lost 9-7 to Lee’s Sickinger and Hardesty as well.

On the men’s side Grabuelda Cruañas registered three victories in Bracket C, defeating Middle Georgia’s Jordan Clayton, 7-5, 6-3, and Middle Georgia’s Leandro Otero, 7-5, 6-3. In the finals he posted a 7-6, 6-2, win against Clayton Godfrey.

Also in Bracket C, Omar Santiagonúñez Ahumada recorded a 6-0, 6-2, decision versus Georgia Southwestern’s Tyler Willingham before losing 7-6, 6-2, to Godfrey, while Riccardo Ferraris dropped a 2-6, 7-5, 10-6, to Otero in his first match.

In Bracket A Axel Lucich collected a pair of victories with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-4, win over Georgia Southwestern’s Steven Blythe and a 6-4, 6-0, decision versus Middle Georgia’s Santino Romeo. In the semifinals he lost 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, to Middle Georgia’s Nishanth Rebello. CU’s Ramon Puertolas dropped his first match in Bracket A, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8, to Middle Georgia’s Octavio Tamola.

In Bracket B Thiago Lopes lost in the first round, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7, to Middle Georgia’s Alejandro Prada.

In doubles Bracket A, Lopes and Lucich defeated Middle Georgia’s Prada and Rebello, 8-2, before dropping an 8-6 decision to Point University’s Federico Barbon and Joseph Klokow. Puertolas and Ferraris lost a tiebreaker, 7-5, in their opening match to Middle Georgia’s Alvaro Conesa and Tamola.

In Bracket B Grabuelda Cruañas and Santiagonúñez Ahumada dropped an 8-4 decision to Georgia Southwestern’s Beau Millwood and Luke Eafano.

Cumberland plays in the ITA Southeast Regionals in Georgetown, Ky., on September 21-24.
