Bulldogs win season opener, 9-0

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland swept the singles and doubles and defeated the University of the South, 9-0, in men’s tennis action Tuesday in Sewanee, Tenn.

The Bulldogs (1-0) won the opening match of the year for both teams with three victories in doubles and six wins in singles, all in straight sets.

In doubles seventh-ranked Evan Sanna and Antonio Manual Marcelo defeated Grant Hopkins and Levi Joy, 8-4, at No. 1, while Na’im Azhar and Pedro Rodrigues won 8-6 at No. 2 over Rand Jackson and Alex Cooper and Devin Crotzer and Andres Burgos claimed an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 against Alex Human and Aaron Cotton.

In singles Marcelo posted a 6-3, 7-5, victory over Jackson at No. 1, Azhar won 6-4, 6-0, against Hopkins at No. 2 and Sanna defeated Joy, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3. Rodrigues recorded a 6-4, 6-2, win at No. 4 over Cotton, Burgos posted a 6-1, 6-2, victory against Human at No. 5 and Jeremy Fleming won 6-2, 6-4, at No. 6 against Cooper.

Cumberland does not play again until March 4 when CU will take on Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., as part of a Spring Break trip that will includes matches against Warner University and Webber International.
