Shimukowa claims national championship in 800-meters
Charles Shimukova won the 800-meters Saturday at the NAIA Indoor Championships.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland’s Charles Shimukowa won the national championship in the 800-meters and Bumnene Ndebele finished sixth in the triple jump Saturday at the 54th Annual NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Brookings, S.D.

Shimukowa posted the second-fastest qualifying time in the 800 in the preliminaries Friday and improved on that mark in the finals, finishing the event in 1:52.50, three-tenths of a second in front of Spring Arbor’s Max Whittredge in second place.

Shimukowa becomes the first track national champion in Cumberland history and the fourth individual to win a national title at CU, joining wrestlers Keith Cupp, Corey Bleaken and Jake Williams.

Ndebele registered a sixth-place finish for the Phoenix in the triple jump, clearing 48-1.25 on his fifth of six tries in the event.
