LEBANON, Tenn. – Arthur Amorim and Angel Acevedo Reyes each collected 11 kills in Cumberland’s victory over Thomas More while Jordan Pierce registered a triple-double in a loss to Siena Heights in men’s volleyball action Friday in Adrian, Mich.
The Phoenix (8-17) finish action in the tournament at Siena Heights University with matches Saturday versus Goshen College and Lincoln College.
Amorim and Acevedo Reyes combined for 22 kills and just six errors in 35 total attacks versus Thomas More while Pierce handed out 23 assists. Stephan Davis added eight kills for CU.
Davis registered two kills and Pierce and Acevedo Reyes posted one apiece for an early 6-4 advantage. Kills by Amorim and Davis put the Phoenix ahead, 12-9, and spikes by Mason Chambers and Acevedo Reyes along with three Thomas More errors pushed the lead to 19-12.
Acevedo Reyes and Amorim netted kills and Lester added another for a 25-21 set win by CU.
TMU opened an early lead in the second set on kills from Brock Cassin and Andy Geigle along with two blocks by Cassin and Nick Richard. Chambers netted two kills for the Phoenix but Richard answered with a pair for a 10-6 Saints advantage.
Pierce and Amorim collected kills and two TMU errors evened the set at 10. Chambers and Amorim registered a block and Amorim and Davis added spikes, but Thomas More still led 16-13. Acevedo Reyes tallied four kills in a nine-point stretch and Lester provided a kill and a block during an 8-3 CU spurt, tying the set at 22.
Cassin and Thomas Williams posted a block and Cumberland committed three straight attack errors, but three consecutive errors by the Saints and a final kill from Amorim helped CU squeak out a 26-24 set victory.
Richard started the third set with three kills and Cassin recorded a block for an 8-4 TMU advantage. Acevedo Reyes collected two kills and Lester netted two service aces along with a kill by Amorim, pushing the Phoenix in front, 11-8.
Davis recorded two kills and Amorim posted one for a 17-14 CU edge. The teams traded three-point spurts and a kill by Acevedo Reyes pushed the Cumberland lead to 23-19. Amorim and Chambers provided the final two points for CU in a 25-22 CU set win.
Pierce collected 10 kills, 15 assists and 10 digs and Amorim netted eight kills in CU’s 3-0 loss to Siena Heights.
Emmanuel Chaidez and Evan Cashen recorded a block and Chaidez and Alex Garavalia posted another along with kills by Chaidez and Bryce Johnson, helping Siena Heights to a 6-3 edge in the first set. Pierce netted two kills for Cumberland but Kevin Gomez and Chaidez and Cashen and Chaidez registered two more blocks.
Keegan Crawford provided a block and a kill, increasing the SHU advantage to 16-8. Chambers posted two kills and Acevedo Reyes had one as well, but Garavalia and Johnson answered with spikes for the home team. Arthur and Acevedo Reyes netted kills for CU before Cashen and Chaidez got the final two for Siena Heights, 25-16.
Kills by Garavalia and Johnson and a service ace by Emilier De Jesus put the Saints ahead, 10-5, in the second set. Amorim and Pierce recorded spikes for the Phoenix but Cashen and Chaidez colleted another block and Chaidez and Garavalia added kills for a 17-10 SHU advantage.
Cumberland never got closer than nine the rest of the set, with Cashen tallying three kills and Kevin Gomez and Justin Gray posting the final two in another 25-16 set.
Acevedo Reyes and Amorim registered kills and Davis and Amorim netted a block early in the third set. Gomez and Cashen provided two kills apiece for an 11-5 Siena Heights lead and spikes by Garavalia and Johnson pushed the advantage to 17-10.
Amorim and Tyler Sturzoiu collected kills for CU and Lester and Sturzoiu combined for a block, part of an 8-1 Cumberland spurt. Davis netted two kills and Lester and Acevedo Reyes had one each, tying the set at 17.
Chaidez and Cashen recorded kills, putting the Saints ahead for good, and a block by Gray and Chaidez gave SHU game point. Acevedo Reyes and Amorim posted kills for the Phoenix but Johnson and Keegan Crawford got a final block in a 25-22 set victory for the Saints.
