LEBANON, Tenn. – Arthur Amorim combined for 25 kills and Christian Lester recorded 20 for Cumberland men’s volleyball in a pair of 3-1 loss Saturday against St. Xavier University and eighth-ranked Mount Mercy University in Chicago, Ill.
The Phoenix (9-22) play their final two regular season matches of the program’s inaugural season this coming week at Campbellsville University and Midway University. The Mid-South Conference Championships are set for April 5-7 in Bowling Green, Ky.
Amorim registered 13 kills, Lester posted nine and Jordan Pierce collected 28 assists and 10 digs in a 3-1 loss to St. Xavier. CU lost the first two sets easily before winning the third and falling in the final set, 33-31.
The match against the eighth-ranked Mustangs was much tighter, with Cumberland dropping the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-18, before winning the third and losing the fourth set, 25-16. Amorim led three players with double-digit kills with 12 while Stephan Davis finished with 11 and Lester added 10. Pierce handed out 31 assists and posted 15 digs as well.
Lester tallied a pair of kills and Brian Hogg posted one early in the opening set against St. Xavier, evening the score at six, but two kills and a block by SXU’s Elonas Marcauskas put the Cougars (16-5) in front, 9-6. Tyler Sturzoiu and Amorim recorded kills for CU and spikes by Pierce and Amorim kept the deficit at three.
Kills by Justin McCarthy and Kyle Springer, three straight service aces from Andrew Bergstrand and a block by Marcauskas and Springer stretched St. Xavier’s advantage to 19-11. McCarthy added two more kills and Ben Gabor got the final one to end the set, 25-14.
McCarthy recorded two kills and Gabor collected one for a 6-3 SXU edge to start the second set. Lester posted a kill and Sturzoiu and Pierce tallied a block, but Marcauskas and Gabor registered three blocks in a five-point stretch for a 15-5 SXU lead.
The Cougars kept the pressure on three consecutive service aces by Springer before two kills by Samuel Rodriguez and then a service ace by Rodriguez finished the set, 25-11.
Amorim and Davis got a block for the Phoenix and Hogg posted two kills early in the third set. Three errors by the Cougars evened the set at seven and a kill by Pierce and a service ace from Lester kept the score tied.
Davis and Amorim collected another block and Lester’s kill put Cumberland ahead, 14-12. Sturzoiu added two kills but two spikes by Rodriguez and one from Bergstrand tied the set at 18. Two errors by the Cougars and another kill from Sturzoiu evened the score at 20 and Amorim posted a kill before a block by Davis and Lester made it 23-21 CU.
Lester tallied a kill and Rodriguez committed an error to end the set, 25-23, for the Phoenix.
Amorim registered two kills and Davis added one early in the fourth set, but Gabor posted two kills and McCarthy netted one for a 6-3 SXU advantage. Bergstrand’s kill and an error by Cumberland extended the Cougars lead to 11-6, but the Phoenix answered with kills from Lester, Amorim and Sturzoiu.
Amorim and Hogg added kills to even the set at 13 and Lester posted two kills and Hogg had another to tie the set at 19. Amorim’s spike gave CU a 22-21 edge, but Gabor answered with two straight kills for the Cougars. Amorim and Gabor traded kills on four consecutive points and a service error by SXU evened the set at 25.
The teams continued to trade kills, with McCarthy and Hogg, then Springer and Lester and finally Aaron Kummer and Amorim to make it 28-all. Gabor got a kill by SXU committed a service error before kills by Marcauskas and Amorim tied the set at 30.
After an attack error by St. Xavier, McCarthy posted two straight kills and Kummer ended the match with a spike, 33-31.
The Phoenix took an early lead in the first set against Mount Mercy thanks to kills by Amorim and Davis and three errors by the Mustangs. Lester and Amorim collected kills for a 10-8 edge, but three straight errors by CU and a kill from Nikola Stoimenov put MMU in front, 12-10.
Stoimenov collected two more spikes before kills by Lester and Sturzoiu for the Phoenix. Lester posted another and Amorim tallied two kills, cutting the deficit to 20-17, but a solo block from Strahil Svilenski and one by Stoimenov and Svilenski and then a kill from Stoimenov made it 23-18 Mustangs. Ben Steffen recorded a kill and Andrew Colantone and Steffen ended the set with a block, 25-22.
Cumberland trailed 8-0 to start the second set, five of those errors by the Phoenix, but a service ace by Sturzoiu, a block from Davis and Amorim and three Mustangs errors made it 10-5 MMU. Lester and Amorim posted kills and Pierce had a service ace, pulling CU within 13-9.
Jarred Hall and Dalton Hynek collected kills and two CU errors stretched the Mount Mercy lead to 17-11. Hogg registered a kill and Davis tallied a pair before one by Lester got the Phoenix to 19-16. The teams traded errors before a final block by Quinn Miller finished the set, 25-18.
Amorim and Lester posted kills to open the third set but Julian Armendano registered a solo block and Bobby Muller and Steffen had another for a 9-5 Mustangs advantage. Sturzoiu collected a kill, Lester added a service ace and four errors by Mount Mercy preceded a kill by Amorim, evening the set at 11.
Sturzoiu’s service ace and a kill by Davis put the Phoenix ahead, 13-11, but the Mustangs surged in front with two kills by Armendano and one from Muller. Lester recorded two kills and Amorim and Pierce got a block, tying the set at 18, and Sturzoiu’s spike gave CU a 20-19 edge.
Two errors by the Mustangs and kills from Amorim and Davis made it game point. Davis added another kill to end the set, 25-21.

Stoimenov collected two more kills and a service ace by Stoimenov along with a kill from Gaskill pushed the Mustangs lead to 20-10. Lester netted a kill and Amorim got two for Cumberland before a service error ended the match, 25-16.
