CAMPBELSVILLE, Ky.- The Phoenix fought down to the wire but came up short as they fell to #2 Ranked Campbellsville Tigers, 3-1.
Jordan Pierce led the Phoenix in both kills and assists as he was able to tally in 9 and 21. Caleb Ginnings also led the Phoenix but in digs with 13.
The first set started at 1-1 as Cumberland’s Michael Conway was able to record the first point of the game for the Phoenix but was matched right afterwards by the Tigers. After numerous errors by both teams, the score was tied at 4. A kill by James Born and an ace by Brain Hogg put the Phoenix ahead of the Tigers 6-4. A kill by Campbellsville’s Max Stotridge and Yannik Ahr helped the Tigers fight back and tie the Phoenix at 8.
Errors occurring by both teams put the game tied at 11. A kill by Conway put the Phoenix on a start to a 3-0 run to lead the Tigers, 14-11. The Tigers continued to record errors which allowed the Phoenix to take an 18-13 lead. After a kill by Pierce and Tyler Sturzoiu, the Phoenix were able to lead the Tigers, 22-17. The Tigers started to cut at the lead a little from a kill by Jason Camacho but an attack error put the Phoenix at set point and a serving error put the Phoenix victorious in set one, winning 25-20.
The Tigers started out 2-1 ahead of the Phoenix to begin set two, but a kill by Mason Chambers and an attack error by Camacho, tied the game at 3. The Tigers found a spark in their offense as they were able to record two aces and a pair of kills by Ahr, to put them ahead of the Phoenix 8-4. A kill by Conway and multiple errors by the Tigers, put the Phoenix in reach of the lead as they trailed 12-9. A pair of kills by Born and a solo kill by Pierce continued to help cut the lead, as the Phoenix still trailed 17-15.
The Phoenix began to take advantage of the Tigers mistakes as they were able to tie the game up at 22. After an attack error by Sturzoiu that put the Tigers at set point, and kill by Camacho clinched the win in set two for the Tigers, winning 25-23.
The Tigers started at a 3-1 at the beginning of the third set, but with recurring errors by the Tigers the Phoenix were able to come back and tie the game up at 6. A kill by Cumberland’s Christian Lester and Conway helped the Phoenix cut the lead, as the Tigers were ahead 12-10. The Phoenix begin to record multiple errors that allowed the Tigers to take an 18-14 lead.
After a kill by Pierce and an attack error by Ahr the game was again tied up with a score of 19. Kills by both teams put the score at 23-22, Tigers lead, but an attack error by Sturzoiu put the Tigers at set point. The Tigers were able to come out ahead in set three, winning 25-23, after a serving error by the Phoenix.
The Phoenix started set four out strong as they lead the Tigers 4-2, coming from an ace by Pierce and a kill by Sturzoiu. The Tigers quickly fought back and tied the game up at 6, due to errors by the Phoenix. Kills by both ends of the court kept the game tied till it was 10-10. With multiple attack errors by Ahr and Camacho, the Phoenix were able to take a 17-13 lead. A kill by Cumberland’s Asa Sewell and Pierce continued to increase the Phoenix lead to 21-16.
A kill by Stotridge and Ahr on top of errors by the Phoenix put the Tigers back in reach, as the Phoenix still led 23-19. A pair of attack errors by Conway, put the game at 24-21, still Phoenix lead. After a kill by Campbellsville’s Joudiel Poveymirow, the Tigers went on a 4-0 run, due to Phoenix errors, which allowed the Tigers to come back and win set four, 26-24, and win the match 3-1.
The Phoenix will face against Webber International, Friday, March 13th at Noon in Campbellsville, Ky.
