Founded in 1842, Cumberland University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the central South. The University offers a variety of educational, athletic and social experiences to enhance the learning opportunities of the current student body.

Cumberland has an exceptional academic program steeped in the liberal arts. Cumberland offers a bachelor's degree in 20 majors and four master's degree programs. In addition there are 29 minors and seven pre-professional academic areas of focus to select from -- everything from education and nursing to anthropology and theatre.

Our offerings include a unique integrated math and science program, one of the Southeast's few anthropology minors, an accelerated nursing degree, a respected criminal justice program and a new engineering sciences program. Few institutions have a heritage as rich. Past Cumberland University alumni include United States Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, who also was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945; James Lafayette Bomar, president of Rotary International; Thomas P. Gore, United States senator; more than 80 congressmen, including Albert Gore, Sr.; two justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, Howell Edmunds Jackson and Horace Harmon Lurton; and 13 governors, including Frank G. Clement.

Cumberland continues its tradition of excellence by focusing on the students of today. The University is a contemporary liberal arts school, “committing itself to provide a sound education while preparing each student to compete in today's dynamic and demanding workplace,” says Cumberland University President Dr. Harvill C. Eaton.

While Cumberland has a distinguished past, the university is focused on the future and on educating the next generation of leaders. Professors, coaches, staff and administrators have set assisting students to ensure success both in and out of the classroom as a primary goal. Cumberland is an institution committed to excellence and to supporting our students in their collegiate endeavors. We invite you to visit the campus and experience Cumberland.
