Phoenix claim first MSC win

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The University of the Cumberlands scored three runs in fourth and sixth innings to claim a 6-5 victory in the opener but Sara Jordan allowed just one run and four hits in three-plus innings of work and Kassydi Montgomery collected three runs and three hits in the nightcap to secure a 10-6 win on Saturday in Williamsburg, Ky.

With bases loaded in the top of the third, Tessa Tomaselli drove in one run to put the Phoenix (11-9-1, 1-1 Mid-South) on the board and a two run double by Courtney Miles game Cumberland a 3-0 lead. Montgomery reached on an error by the left fielder which plated Tomaselli and Hoppenjans sac fly to the second baseman brought home Miles to give CU a 5-0 lead.

The Patriots (7-13, 1-1 Mid South) scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and the sixth innings and did not allow Cumberland to score another run, sending the Patriots to a 6-5 win.

Imani Torregano, Tomaselli and Jocelyn Hernandez each collected one run and two hits in the opener. Kaitlin Kralj pitched four innings for the squad, allowing 10 hits and three runs and just one walk. Nicole Pratt (0-1) took the loss for the Phoenix allowing three earned runs and striking out two batters.

Kacey Russell (4-3) picked up her fourth win of the season pitching an entire game for the Patriots, allowing all five runs, four earned and two strike outs.

In the second game of the day a one run double by Tomaselli in the top of the first gave the Phoenix a 1-0 lead, but the University of the Cumberlands responded with a single run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at one.

Woodring singled down the middle to plate Montgomery in the second inning to give CU a one run lead, 2-1.

Cumberland scored three runs in the top of the fourth off a single by Kayala Hoppenjans that drove in Miles and a two run double by Tyra Graham.

The Patriots came back in the scoring four runs to knot the game at five, but the Phoenix only allowed the University of the Cumberlands to score one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Cumberland scored two runs in the top of the fifth as Tomaselli doubled to center field scoring in Torregano and a one run single by Miles. In the sixth inning Torregano singled to left field and an error on the Patriots scored in Graham. A one run single by Hernandez closed out the sixth inning with Cumberland leading, 9-6.

In the top of the seventh inning Montgomery hit a home run to left center to secure a 10-6 victory for the squad.

Torregano collected two hits, two runs and one RBI and Tomaselli recorded two hits, one run and two RBIs in the nightcap. Kindsey Wilder opened up the second game, pitching three and a half innings allowing five runs and eight hits. Jordan came into relief half way through the fourth inning and allowed one run and four hits for the Phoenix.

Sydney Maynard (1-4) took her fourth loss of the season pitching three and a half innings and allowing eight hits, five runs, three earned and not striking out a single batter. Taryn Sigl came into relief allowing eight hits and five runs as well.

Graham walked in the third inning to start the line-up off and Torregano placed a perfect bunt and made it to first and advanced Graham to second. Hernandez then also singled off a bunt to load the bases for the Phoenix and a one run single by Tomaselli plated Graham.

Miles ripped a double to center field to plate both Hernandez and Torregano and Tomasseli moved to third. Montgomery reached on an error by the left fielder and Tomaselli came across on the play. Hoppenjans one out pop up to the second baseman scored in Miles to give CU a 5-0 lead.

Coari Robertson doubled to left field with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Samantha Payne drew a walk. Cassandra Johnson singled to left field and scored in Robertson on the play. Kaylee James then singled off a bunt helping the Patriots load the bases.

A two run single to right field by Katie Baldock plated Payne and Johnson to pull the University of the Cumberlands within two, 5-3.

In the sixth inning James grounded out to the Graham and Baldock flied out to right field for a quick two outs for the Phoenix but England then drew a walk. Elliston reached on an error by Graham and England advanced to second. Madison Monnin then reached on a fielding error to load the bases for the Patriots.

Kailin Yantz then doubled and advanced to third on the throws, and Monnin advanced to third and scored on the throw while, Elliston and England both came home for the 6-5 win.

A two out single to right center by Hernandez started the second game off and Tomaselli hit a double to center field to plate Hernandez for CU’s only run of the first inning. The Patriots responded in the bottom of the inning with a home run by England to knot the game at one.

Shae Dunn and Kayala Hoppenjans both grounded out to the short stop in the top of the second but Montgomery hit a double to center field to get a runner on base. Taylor Woodring’s one run single up the Middle plated Montgomery to put the squad ahead 2-1.

A big fourth inning started off with a single up the middle by Miles. Dunn the struck out swinging and Miles advanced to second on a wild pitch. Hoppenjans one run single up the middle drove home Miles for a 3-1 advantage.

Montgomery then singled to left field and Hoppenjans moved to second, before Woodring popped up to the third baseman. Montgomery and Hoppenjans each advanced a base on a wild pitch. A two run double by Graham scored in both Montgomery and Hoppenjans to extend the Phoenix lead, 5-1.

The Patriots came back in the bottom of the inning as Stephenson doubled to center field and Elliston singled and Stephenson came home on the throw. Monnin was thrown out at first but Elliston advanced to second.

Yantz reached on an error and was thrown out at second before Elliston came home to pull the Patriots within two, 5-3. Johnson was hit by the next pitch and James singled up the middle scoring in pinch runner Kilburn. James then stole second and a one run single by Baldock tied the game at five.

Torregano singled to start the fifth inning and a sac bunt by Hernandez moved Torregano to second. Tomaselli ripped a one run double to center field for CU’s sixth run. Miles then singled up the middle to score in Tomaselli for a 7-5 lead.

The University of the Cumberlands scored one final run in the bottom of the inning as Kilburn reached on a fielder’s choice and Monnin was thrown out on the play but Elliston scored.

Woodring singled to right center in the sixth inning and Graham reached on a fielder’s choice and then stole second. Torregano singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw while Graham scored on the play to pull ahead, 8-6. Hernandez singled down the right field line to bring in Torregano for the final run of the inning.

At the top of the seventh Montgomery hit her fourth home run of the year, to left center to secure the Phoenix’ 10-6 victory.

Cumberland returns to play tomorrow against the University of the Cumberland’s to complete their four game road series for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Central Time.
