WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Phoenix dropped a five inning 11-3 loss to the University of the Cumberlands in the opener and Tyra Graham recorded two runs, three hits and one RBI on the day including a one run double that tied the second game at four but the Patriots scored two runs in the sixth to win the final game of the series, 6-4 on Sunday in Williamsburg, Ky.
Two big innings for the Patriots (9-13) scoring five runs in the first inning and four runs in the third inning helped UC record their second Mid-South Conference win.
Cumberland (11-11-1) got their bats going in the fourth inning scoring their only three runs. A one run single by Tessa Tomaselli plated CU’s first run and loaded the bases for the squad. Shae Dunn then drew a walk, and Hernandez scored on the play. A single by Kassydi Montomgery brought across Tomaselli to pull the Phoenix within seven, 10-3.
The University of the Cumberlands scored one more run in the fifth inning to end the game in five innings, 11-3.
Alexa Snyder (3-3) took the loss for the Phoenix, allowing five runs, all earned, three hits and two walks ub .1 innings pitched. Freshman Allie Tomlinson came into relief and in two innings pitched, allowed five runs, none earned and five hits in two plus innings of work.
Nicole Pratt pitched the final two innings allowing one run, one hit and walking one batter. Tomaselli collected one hit, one run and one RBI in the opener.
Kacey Russell (5-3) got the win for the Patriots, her fifth of the season, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk.
The second game of the day looked much like yesterday’s as Cumberland battled to make a comeback but it wasn’t enough dropping a 6-4 decision.
The Phoenix got on the board in the first inning with a ground out by Tomaselli that plated Graham for an unearned run. The Patriots responded in the bottom of the innings with two runs to take a 2-1 advantage.
Dunn ripped a homer to center field in the second inning to knot the game at two but UC’s Cassandra Johnson hit a homer run off pitcher Kindsey Wilder in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 3-2.
A one run double by Shelby Prichard brought home Kassydi Montgomery to tie the game once again at three. A double by Kilburn for the Patriots scored in a run to put them ahead by one, 4-3 but a one run double by Graham evened the score at four in the bottom of the sixth.
Cumberland could not hold off the Patriots, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to win the final game of the series, 6-4.
Graham went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI and Jocelyn Hernandez collected two hits. Wilder (2-2) got the loss, allowing six hits and three runs in three innings.
University of the Cumberlands Taryn Sigl (2-6) picked up the win, allowing one run, unearned, and two hits in two innings.
Cumberland is back in action on Tuesday, to take on host Campbellsville University for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
A walk by Kaylee James started off the first inning for the Patritos, and she then stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Katie Baldock. A wild pitch thrown by Snyder allowed James to score in the first run. Ciara England then drew a walk and a double by Morgan Elliston plated England. A two run homer by Samantha Payne and a single by Hayley Kilburn forced a pitching change for Cumberland.
A two out single up the middle by Kailin Yantz advanced Kilburn to third, and while Yantz stole second Courtney Miles threw the ball down to try and get the out but Kilburn stole home for a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second Baldock reached on a fielding error by Graham, and England doubled to left center and Baldock scored on the play for the Patriots sixth run.
UC scored four runs in the third inning as Madison Monnin doubled to left center to get into scoring position and a sacrifice bunt advanced her to third. James reached on an error and both Yantz and Monnin scored on the throw. A one run double by Baldock plated James and and Baldock advanced on a wild pitch. A single by England was all the Patriots needed to end the inning leading, 10-0.
A single by Graham in the fourth sparked a three-run inning for CU as Imani Torregano grounded out to the second baseman but moved Graham to second. A single by Hernandez advanced Graham and a one run single by Tomaselli scored in Graham.
Miles singled to the third base side to load the bases for the Phoenix. Dunn then drew a walk, and Hernandez came home and a Montgomery single to left field plated Tomaselli to cut the Phoenix deficit to seven, 10-3.
One run in the bottom of the fifth was all the Patriots needed and a one run single to right center by Yantz ended the game, 11-3.
Cumberland fought back to tie the game three times in the nightcap but two runs in the bottom of the sixth helped the Patriots to a 6-4 win.
Graham singled up the middle to start the game off and Taylor Woodring reached on a fielding error. Hernandez grounded out advancing both batters into scoring position. Tomaselli then grounded out, but Graham came home on the play for the only run of the inning.
A one run double by England in the bottom of the inning tied the game at one and a single by Monnin scored in England for a 2-1 lead.
Dunn then hit a homer to center field to knot the score at two but a homerun by Johnson gave UC a 3-2 advantage again. A one run double by Prichard in the fourth inning tied the game once again at three.
Monnin singled to right field and a Kilburn double scored in Monnin to regain the lead, 4-3. Montomgery reached on a fielding error and pinch runner Brianna Gregory advanced on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a pop up by Kayala Hoppenjans. A double by Graham helped the Phoenix tie the game at four. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Patriots put them ahead, 6-4 for the win.
