PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Maci Lerno racked up 17 kills and Sara Glassman recorded 32 assists as Cumberland University swept their conference opener against the University of Pikeville on Friday night.

Cumberland (4-3, 1-0) registered 13 more kills than Pikeville (1-6, 0-2) while compiling a .214 hitting percentage compared to the .198 of UPIKE.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the first set by taking a lead as large as four points before Pikeville took their first timeout of the match. The Bears came back to tie the game back up at 16, but a 5-0 CU run brought the score to 21-15. The five point advantage was enough to regain the lead and CU would not relinquish it for the remainder of the set.

In the second stanza, Pikeville controlled much of the set, holding a lead as late as at the 19-17 mark. The Bulldogs went on a late 8-3 run to secure a 2-0 lead in the match.

During frame number three, the Bulldogs took a commanding lead early in the frame and held a lead of at least five for most of the finale. A Caprisha Webster kill wrapped up the sweep for Cumberland.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow afternoon as they face off against the University of Cumberlands. First serve is scheduled for Noon.
