MARIETTA, Ga. – Maci Lerno notched consecutive double-doubles, Sara Glassman eclipsed the 50 assist mark for fifth time this season and Kara Snell collected 48 digs as Cumberland dropped two matches to the Running Eagles of Life University on Saturday afternoon.
Lerno led all Bulldog attacks in both matches, she collected a season-high 31 kills and 16 digs during the first match and picked up 10 kills and digs in the second. Michelle Evans added 27 total kills, Ashley Sherrick collected 13 and Amanda Worrell picked up 15 rounding out the CU attack.
Glassman assisted on 53 assists in match one to go along with 39 in match two. The freshman setter contributed 30 digs in the doubleheader, 15 in each match, her tenth and eleventh of the season.
The two teams stayed fairly even in the opening set as neither team took a large lead through the first half of the frame. Following an attacking error by Life’s Ellen Wolferman and a Sherrick kill, Cumberland took its largest lead of the frame at two. Lerno collected consecutive kills forcing a Life timeout. Out of the Running Eagles timeout, the Bulldogs carried their momentum and scored the set’s final two points, the last on a Sherrick kill to win 25-21.
10 attacking errors hindered the Bulldogs from gaining much momentum in the set. Frame two opened with LifeU going on a 6-0 run. Cumberland called its first timeout and followed the break notched its first point of the frame. CU was able to fight its way back into the set thanks to multiple service and attacking errors from Life. Wolferman ended the second set with a kill to tie the match at one apiece.
LifeU continued its momentum from the second set opening frame three one a 5-1 run. The Bulldogs remained close, moving within two points six separate times. With the score sitting at 20-14 CU went on a 5-0 to be just one point down, but Life tailed four of the next five points to bring up set point. Evans and Lerno collected kills to bring the score to 24-22 but Gaby Ferran picked up the final kill of the set, winning 25-22.
Frame four began similar to the second and third set with LifeU controlling the early portion of the set. The Running Eagles led 17-14 which caused the Bulldogs to burn a timeout. CU scored on five of the next nine possessions to pull within one and forced a LifeU stoppage. An attacking error from Ferran tied the frame up at 24. Kills from Lerno and Worrell secured the Bulldogs victory, taking set four 26-24.
Cumberland and Life battled through the fifth set as neither team took a large lead in the finale. CU held the lead at the swap and carried two point advantage forcing the Running Eagles to call a timeout. The break benefited LifeU as it scored on five of the next seven possession to take the final frame 15-13 and the first match of the doubleheader 3-2.
Match two started off with Cumberland dominating play. The Bulldogs rallied off four straight points to take a four point lead in the early part of the nightcap’s first set. The Running Eagles would not go down without a fight as it battled back to tie the match up at 20 and take the lead on the next play. CU was unable to regain the lead and dropped the set 25-23.
The Bulldogs dominated play in the second set. Both teams remained tied at the 13 all mark before CU went on a 12-1 run to win a well-played and well-executed set 25-14. Cumberland’s attack was aided by six players who collected kills in the set victory.
Life held the lead for most of the third set before CU took the lead on a Brittany Wiseman service ace. The Running Eagles were able to battled back and retake the lead following a Lerno attacking error and Megan Lundgreen ace. Sam Diebold collected the final kill in the set, giving LifeU a two sets to one lead with a 25-21 victory.
Set five saw the two teams exchange points for the early portion of the frame. Following a service ace and bad set from Glassman, the Bulldogs took a timeout looking to regroup. The two teams battled until Cumberland rallied to tie the set at 23. Nohema Garcia Torres could not handle the Cumberland return and CU tied the match again at 24. Life ended the Bulldog threat and took the match 3-1.
The Bulldogs continue Mid-South play on the road Tuesday versus Campbellsville and then on October, 27 versus Lindsey Wilson. CU will also play Indiana- Southeast on the 27th.
