PULASKI, Tenn. – Maci Lerno collected her 14th double-double with 23 kills and 12 digs and Michelle Evans contributed 17 kills as Cumberland won a thrilling third and fourth set to claim its third consecutive victory against Martin Methodist Tuesday evening.

Freshman setter Sara Glassman notched her 11th double-double of the season assisting on 52 attacks and adding 12 digs. Kara Snell registered 15 digs to lead the defense and Amanda Worrell posted 14 kills to round out the CU attack.

Cumberland and the RedHawks exchanged points for much of the deciding frame as neither team held a commanding lead in the set. Two CU attacking errors, a service ace and a Blaise Winterburn kill gave MMC a three point lead late in the set. The RedHawks held set point three separate times before Cumberland finally held the advantage at the 31-30 mark following one of Evans’ three kills in the set. Winterburn’s attacking error gave CU the set victory and the momentum for the remainder of the match.

In the finale, Martin Methodist led for most of the frame, holding an advantage of as large as four late in the set after a Lerno attacking error. CU remainder patient and battled back to tie the frame at 22 when MMC’s Rya Wooten mishandled a block from Caprisha Webster. Evans collected two of the final three points while Brittney Wiseman sandwiched in a service ace giving Cumberland the match.

The opening frame saw CU jump out to an early lead to start play before the RedHawks took a quick lead at 12-10. The Bulldogs battled back to regain the lead following a Wooten attacking error. The advantage would hold for Cumberland as Worrell blasted a perfectly set ball from Glassman for the 1-0 lead.

Martin Methodist opened the second set with authority, jumping out to an early 7-3 advantage. Evans, Lerno and Wiseman led the attack for the Bulldogs on the next 7-0 run taking the score to 10-7. The RedHawks followed the Bulldogs run with one of their own seven point run. That run would be enough for MMC to hold on to the lead and take the second set 25-19.

Cumberland wraps up the regular season at home with two conference matches this week with Georgetown on Thursday and Shawnee State on Friday. First serve for those matches are slated for 6 p.m. on both days. CU will then travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky to compete in the Mid-South Conference Championship on Thursday, November 12.
