LEBANON, Tenn. – Maci Lerno accounted for 11 kills and 12 digs while Amanda Worrell recorded 12 kills to help lead Cumberland to a sweep over Milligan College on Thursday night.
During the opening set the Buffaloes posted the first point but the Phoenix were quick to respond with a kill from Worrell. As Milligan tallied the next few points, a point kill from Ashton Perez and Isidora Markovic including a few attack errors on Milligan would help CU knot the score at seven.
Two kills from Michelle Evans and one from Worrell and Mikayla Wickham would help Cumberland take a four point lead, 14-10. A combined effort behind the offense, with points from Lerno, Worrell, Markovic and Evans would make the score, 20-15.
The Phoenix would post five consecutive points with two kills from Wickham and one from Evans to help them claim the first frame, 25-20.
The second stanza would start off with Milligan taking an early lead, with two points from Worrell and one from Lerno the Phoenix would trail, 7-3. But, two kills from Markovic and one from Rachel Clement would tie the game at eight.
A service ace from Jena Goodman and a kill from Worrell would secure the game at 12. A six point stretch would have Cumberland regain the lead, 18-13.
A few attack errors on Milligan College would play in CU’s favor, as Markovic closed out the second set with a kill, 25-19.
Milligan came out strong in the final frame taking a six point lead, 8-2. The squad would post a few points from Worrell, Perez, Lerno and Markovic but that woudn’t be enough as Milligan would continue to hold onto their lead, 14-9.
Six consecutive points by Cumberland would have them make a huge comeback and only trail by two, 16-14. Four kills from Lerno and one from Perez and Evans would then knot the game at 20.
A kill from Goodman and Worrell and a block from Evans would give the Phoenix four straight points. A point from Evans and a service ace from Sara Glassman would help Cumberland secure the final frame, 26-24.
Cumberland will host their next three matches, with the first one being against Fisk University on Tuesday, September 20 at 6 p.m.
