Cumberland battles, falls to Life Univ. 3-1
Taylor Kasper tallied 21 digs as Cumberland fell to Life University on Friday night, 3-1.

LEBANON, Tenn. – Sara Glassman recorded 29 assists while Taylor Kasper accounted for 21 digs in a four set loss to Life University on Friday, September 23 at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.

The Phoenix and Running Eagles would go point-for-point in the opening set up until the score was knotted at seven. Life Univ. would then post four consecutive points to help maintain a lead of four, 11-7.

A kill from Isidora Markovic, Amanda Worrell and Mikayla Wickham would then give the Phoenix just a two point deficit, 14-12. The Running Eagles would continue to hold onto the lead, as two kills from Markovic wouldn’t be enough as the Phoenix trailed, 23-18.

An attack error on Life Univ. would play in CU’s favor but two final points from the Running Eagles would let them claim the first set, 25-19.

The second frame would look much like the first, with both teams going back and forth with the score being tied at seven. A few attack errors on Cumberland would give Life Univ. a three point lead, 11-8.

A point from Glassman and a service ace from Kasper including a six point stretch would help the Phoenix pull ahead, 17-13. The Running Eagles would score four consecutive points, but with a kill from Worrell and Maci Lerno, including another service ace from Glassman, Cumberland would win the second stanza, 25-21.

The Phoenix would take an early lead in the third set with a kill from Michelle Evans, Lerno and Wickham but Life Univ. would knot the score at six. Five straight points for the squad with two points from Wickham and one from Evans would give CU a 12-9 lead.

Points from Lerno and Worrell and a multiple attack errors on the Running Eagles wouldn’t be enough for CU to hold onto their lead as the score would then be tied at 17.

Four points for Cumberland with two kills from Markovic and one from Lerno would give CU a one point lead, 21-19. Life Univ. would make a comeback, eventually scoring three final points to close out the third frame, 26-24.

Cumberland would open up the final frame with the first point, with the Running Eagles being quick to respond as the score would be tied at three. Seven consecutive points for Life Univ. would give them a seven point lead, 10-3.

Evans would post a kill before the Running Eagles would go on another four point stretch making the score, 15-5. CU would respond with four points as well with a kill from Ashley Sherrick and Evans and two service aces from Kara Snell.

Five more points for Life Univ. would give them a nine point lead, 20-11. A kill from Markovic wouldn’t be enough to hold back the Running Eagles as the posted three points to close out the final stanza, 25-12.

Cumberland has a quick turnaround as they return to play tomorrow, Saturday, Septemberg 23, to take on Life University again in the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 12 p.m.
