LEBANON, Tenn. – The Phoenix committed just nine attack errors, hitting .310 percent in the match and added eight blocks defeating Life University for their third Mid-South conference victory of the season and ending a five-game losing streak on Saturday in Marietta, Ga.

Mikayla Wickham posted 11 kills for the Phoenix, her sixth game this season with double-figure kills. Sara Glassman recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 assists and 10 digs.

Cumberland (12-11, 3-6 Mid-South) took the advantage early, pulling ahead 6-1 in the opening set three of those points coming from Wickham. A 6-2 run for the Running Eagles (16-9, 4-5 Mid-South) pulled Life within one point of the Phoenix, 8-7. Two errors on Life and a kill by Amanda Worrell helped the squad stay on top 11-8.

CU tried to stay in the lead but the Running Eagles evened the score at 13. Both teams rallied point-for-point but seven consecutive points for the Phoenix sent them to a 21-15 lead. The Running Eagles tacked on two more before Cumberland closed out the first frame, 25-19.

The second set was tied nine times throughout the entire stanza and Cumberland began to pull away with three points in a row, including a kill from Kaleigh Lester and Masa Nalovic and an error on the Running Eagles to stay on top, 21-19. Liz Mann posted three more kills for Life University but it wasn’t enough as the Phoenix responded with a kill from Worrell to claim the second set, 25-23.

A kill by Wickham and a service ace gave Cumberland the first two points in the set and both teams went back-and-forth fighting for the advantage, but the Phoenix came out on top with a kill by Worrell and Rachel Clement and an error on Life University, 8-5. A 4-1 run for the Eagles helped them knot the score at 10 and they continued to build onto the lead staying ahead by no more than two points.

A kill by Worrell sparked an 8-2 run for the Phoenix, five of those point being errors on the Running Eagles. Isidora Markovic added a block and a kill in the run and Nalovic and Wikcham each tallied a point to help Cumberland secure a 25-21, three-set victory over Life University.

The Running Eagles committed 21 total attack errors and hit .163 percent in the match. Mann and Chelsea Hill each recorded 13 kills and Amber Harris collected 17 assists.

The Phoenix return home after a three-game road swing to host Shawnee State on Friday, October 20 at 5 p.m.
