LEBANON, Tenn. – First-ranked Lindsey Wilson won the opening set by just seven points but Cumberland did not score more than 13 points in each of the final frames, dropping a 3-0 decision to the Blue Raiders on Thursday at the Biggers Sports Center in Columbia, Ky.
The Phoenix tallied just 22 kills total and Sara Glassman posted 12 assists on the night. The Phoenix added two blocks and hit just .067 percent in the match.
Cumberland kept close in the first set tying the score twice before taking the advantage off of two attack errors on the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson quickly responded to knot the score at 12 and scoring three consecutive points regained the lead. A service error on LWC tacked on a point for the squad but five unanswered points for the Blue Raiders pulled them ahead 21-14. CU scored four more points in the frame with two kills from Masa Nalovic. A kill by Elly Burke and Klara Mikelova secured the first set, 25-18 for Lindsey Wilson.
The Phoenix could not seem to find their way in the second stanza, scoring a total of eight points. The Blue Raiders took an early 6-0 lead before a kill from Amanda Worrell ended the streak. Another point from Worrell and a service ace from Taylor Kasper cut the Phoenix deficit to six, 9-3. A 4-2 run for LWC pulled them ahead 15-6. The Blue Raiders allowed Cumberland to score just two more points in the set and went on to score five points in a row to win the second frame, 25-8.
A 6-1 run for Lindsey Wilson started the third set and a kill by Isidora Markovic and a service error kept the squad within five. Another 6-2 spurt helped the Blue Raiders more than double their score pulling ahead 14-6. Three errors played in the Phoenix favor and a kill by Mikayla Wickham and Kaleigh Lester gave Cumberland their final points of the set. A kill by Madison Molitar and a service error was the deciding factor in the match, sending the Blue Raiders to a 25-13, third-set victory.
Makenzie Montano led Lindsey Wilson with 34 assists and Paulina Sobolewska posted 10 kills. LWC hit .430 percent in the win added six blocks.
The Phoenix are back in action on Saturday, October 28 to take on Bryan College for senior day at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 11 a.m.
