LEBANON, Tenn. – Cumberland won the opening set 25-4 and Mikayla Wickham tallied a career-best 18 kills to help the Phoenix to a 3-1 victory over Bryan College on Saturday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center for senior day.
Three other Phoenix players collected double-figure kills and four players tallied double-figure digs in the match. Amanda Worrell posted 13 kills and Sara Glassman recorded 21 assists in the victory.
Cumberland only allowed the Lions to score just four points in the first set and went on to tally nine straight points before a service error ended the streak, 16-3. The Lions tacked on one more point with a kill from Mariah Dunlop but the Phoenix responded with eight unanswered points to secure the opening frame, 25-4.
Bryan College found their way in the second set fighting point-for-point in the beginning before CU pulled ahead with five consecutive points. The Lions kept within six with a kill from Hope Burnett and Dunlop and an error on the Phoenix, 20-14. A 4-1 run for the squad helped them win the second frame, 25-15.
The score was tied seven times to start the third stanza but a five-point run for Cumberland with two kills from Masa Nalovic and two errors on the Lions, helped them regain the advantage 12-8. Bryan College responded with four straight points to even the score at 12. Both teams rallied back-and-forth over the final 10 points before an error on the Phoenix and kill by Dunlop scored the final points in the set, helping Bryan earn the third frame, 26-24.
The final set looked much like the third with both teams fighting to take the lead, and an error on the Lions and a kill by Wickham pulled the squad ahead by two, 12-10. Three Phoenix errors played in Bryan College’s favor helping them take the lead, 14-12. An 8-6 spurt for CU sent them to a fourth set victory, 25-21 to defeat the Lions in four.
Burnett recorded 11 kills and Kristen Parrish posed 23 digs on the day. Bryan added four blocks and hit just .061 percent in the match.
Cumberland hits the road to take on Campbellsville University on Tuesday, October 31 at 6 p.m.
