LEBANON, Tenn. – Masa Nalovic posted nine kills and Mikayla Wickham and Abby Akins each collected seven, but sixth-ranked Lindsey Wilson hit .316 for the match in a 3-0 sweep over Cumberland in women’s volleyball action Tuesday night at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
The Phoenix (11-15, 5-6 Mid-South) continue their seven-match homestand Thursday with a 6 p.m. outing against Life University.
Sarah Cruz paced the Blue Raiders (24-3, 11-0) with 11 kills while Grace Blomstedt and Klara Mikelova recorded eight apiece. LWC hit .300 in the opening set and .444 in the second set en route to the victory.
Three kills by Elly Burke and two blocks from Paulina Sobolewska and Cruz helped Lindsey Wilson to a 7-2 lead in the opening set. Cruz added three straight kills and combined with Sobolewska for another block and a 12-2 LWC advantage.
Kills by Wickham, Nalovic and Nicole Carey kept the deficit at 10 for the Phoenix but Blomstedt and Mikelova combined for three kills. Wickham collected a solo block and she and Raegan Moeller added a block as well but a kill by Cruz and a service ace from Peyton Johnson ended the set for LWC, 25-13.
Akins and Wickham each registered two kills and Moeller and Lyssette Serna posted one apiece, helping the Phoenix pull within 9-8 in the second set. Kills by Cruz and Sobloewska pushed the LWC edge to 13-9 but it was the blocking of the Blue Raiders that took control of the set.
Blomstedt and Burke combined for a block, as did Mikelova and Blomstedt and then Autumn Proctor and Blomstedt. Akins and Nalovic tallied kills for Cumberland before Cruz and Blomstedt recorded spikes and Sobolewska and Cruz combined for another block to end the set, 25-15.
Blomstedt and Cruz both collected two kills and Mikelova started the third set with two service aces, giving the Blue Raiders a 7-1 advantage. Moeller and Wickham got a block and Nalovic added a kill before a spike from Wickham got the Phoenix within 9-5.
Lindsey Wilson scored 11 of the next 16 points, including two kills by Cruz and one each from Mikelova and Blomstedt as well as a block by Mikelova and Blomstedt. Cumberland made a run at LWC, answering with an 8-2 spurt led by two kills from Akins, one apiece for Nalovic and Moeller and a block by Carey and Nalovic.
Akins’ second kill pulled CU within 22-18, but Mikelova finished the match with a pair of kills for a 25-20 final set.
Sadie Edmonston posted 16 assists and Sara Glassman netted 10 for the Phoenix while Ali Hanger collected 10 digs and Kara Snell posted nine.
Proctor led the Blue Raiders with 31 assists and Lilo Larzelere and Burke finished with 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
