Big run sparks CU victory
LEBANON, Tenn. – Bona Ogada scored 10 of her 14 points in the second half and Cumberland used a 14-3 run to end the game in a 55-52 victory over Martin Methodist in women’s basketball action Monday night in Pulaski, Tenn.
Cumberland (8-19, 4-10) won for the second time in three contests
CUM trailed 49-41 with 5:58 remaining after MMC’s Micah Anderson hit 1-of-2 free throws. CU’s Chaquaila Gaten started the run with a jumper at 5:49 and Angie Wells also had a basket before Anderson hit the Redhawks final field goals of the night with 3:20 remaining. MMC’s Whitney Robison made 1-of-2 foul shots with 2:49 left, giving the Redhawks a 52-45 advantage.
Ogada scored a field goal and then made one free throw with 1:51 remaining before Gaten netted a bucket with 1:27 remaining. MMC’s Kaneka Brown missed two foul shots with 1:13 left and Ogada’s old-fashioned 3-point play with 59 seconds remaining gave the Bulldogs a 53-52 advantage, their first since leading 19-18 with 7:02 left in the first half.
Ogada scored the game’s final two points as well with 25 seconds left on as assists from Wells, one of eight helpers in the game for the junior. Brown missed a 3-pointer for the Redhawks (18-8, 6-7) with 13 seconds remaining, MMC’s final shot at tying the contest.
Ogada added a team-high seven rebounds, while Wells scored nine points with five boards and the eight assists. Tamara Gonzalez netted 10 points, all in the first half.
Robison led MMC with 16 points and 20 rebounds, while Anderson posted 11 points.
MMC put together a 14-6 run over the final 5:32 of the first half to break a 22-all tie and take a 36-28 advantage into intermission. The Bulldogs shot just 27 percent (9-for-34) in the half and committed 12 turnovers, but the Redhawks had 15 miscues of their own but won the battle of the boards, 30-19.
Gonzalez scored 10 points for CU in the period, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Robison netted 11 points and McKenna Moffett posted nine.
Cumberland continues its current three-game road swing Thursday at Lambuth at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs play their final regular season home game on Saturday, February 28, versus Trevecca. Senior Day activities will take place between the women’s and men’s game.
